I'm not sure wheather to put this post under CPU or Operating Systems, so I went for both, sorry.

Never tried overclock before and want to give it a go. I have an old P2 which basically expendable if I **** it up. The computer is old (1998) and I have lost the Windows 98 disks that came with it, I would like advice on a good OS to put on it, I tried Linux Ubuntu and Suse on but they run increadable slow. Would this be due to the low RAM, CPU speed and a hard drive that I think is on it's last legs?

If linux has a hard time running on it, windows is going to even have a harder time. I would just trash the machine and find a new project.

i had a 400 that ran at 450. it ran hot, those chips didn't overclock well, it wasn't until those cheap celerons came out that overclocking really worked out well.

win98 at best;) its too slow for modern os.
