View Full Version : Do I need more cooling?

Specs below. My VCore is 2.05 and my temps are 40-45C depending on load. My VDimm is 2.9. I can't hit higher than 157 FSB, and I want more.
I have a 120mm 108cfm Sunon on the side panel blowing in on the AGP/NB/CPU area, plus various intake/exhaust case fans.
So, I was thinking. Should I get active/passive DIMM coolers, Vantec HDD cooler, and a PCI slot cooler blowing on the GPU?
If I do all that, i'll have waaay more intake then exhaust, so I'll need to cut a blowhole = alot more work.
Is it all worth it? Think I may get 160FSB out of all that? Thanks.

What heatsink/fan do you have on the northbridge? Have you taken the stock one off and lapped it/replaced the goop with ASII? When I was having problems with bus overclocks, I did this on my KK266. Went from 147-167... Later took the greenie off and put a chunk of a Xeon heatsink on there with ASII & Epoxy mix. I'd try that before anything else...
Hope this helps

The NB HSF is the stock unit, but I have removed the old thermal grease, and reapplied it with ASII.
So you think I should concentrate on better NB cooling, like a BLORB??

Blorb would probably work, but you'd need to lap it quite a bit... My recommendation is to get an old PII or Xeon heatsink and cut it to size with a hack saw or jig saw with a metal cutting blade. Either drill holes in it for screws thru the mobo, or ASII/Arctic Alumina epoxy it to the NB...
If you have already replaced the goop w/ Arctic Silver, you should get pretty decent cooling with that 120 blowing in that area, but you may want to try lapping it and putting a bit more compression on it. Sometimes thos little plastic clips don't hold it down hard enough and you wind up with a layer of ASII thick enough to insulate it, or an air gap that insulates it. Otherwise, it sounds like you have enough case cooling, and it may just be that your board isn't capable of 160FSB.
Peace
