Yup, I have heard those shuttle PSU's pack an incredible punch (like wayyyy more stable than their wattage gives then credit for). That is pretty amazing though looking at those specs of your shuttle

That system likely only draws 150-170W at load, so it's reasonable.

Just out of curiosity, how is the noise level on the Shuttle PS?

almost silent..the loudest component in my system is the HD

talking about pure power(& quality)....:)

I got challenged today with the most difficult question. "If your pc only needs 250W at load, why do you need a quality 600W power supply for?"

lol

for adding a couple dozen hdds or a couple 8800's :)

Because I would never want only 5W of head room with a PSU :p

Because there's a slim chance it'll be very stable. Especially when OCing. Many members can tell you the PSU is one of the most important pieces of your system. Upgrading from an OK, to a solid PSU can even help your OC, and stability issues.

I don't think anyone needs 300W of headroom, unless you're running a peltier or something. Overclocking doesn't increase power consumption as much as everyone thinks.

Amen. It's just that everyone derives their numbers from ****ty PSUs that don't even deserve the big numbers printed on them Kinda the wattage numbers for speakers in the PC world.

I agree many buy PS that are overkill, like me! When I needed a reliable replacement PS that was modular I asked OW his opinion. The Corsair is what he suggested. The fact that it was 520 watts was irrelevent and I can take it with me for the next upgrade.

Do keep in mind when buying a PSU for the purpose of "future proofing" that hardware and standards change all the time. Therefore, even if you buy one that has enough power for possible future applications, the standards are likely to change by then anyway, making your expensive purchase obsolete. A good example of this is the recent introduction 8-pin PCI-e connectors. Those who bought some 1KW SLI monster a year ago thinking they'd be fine now would have to use adapters for the higher end cards. Actually, an even better example is the introduction of the 8800 series, which need 2 PCI-e connectors. Those who bought those monster PSUs a year ago with only 2 PCI-e connectors will need to use adapters to run SLI on those cards. Or buy/trade for a new PSU I suppose.

Dual core stress tests, like maybe dual Prime95s? That and maybe some good 3DMark06 or 07 runs.

Any real good stress test really, for an extended period of time (12 hours would be nice, but maybe a few hours if you can spare it).

I gotta run at the moment, I'll give a more solid answer later tonight.

That must a be one good PSU, or at least have most the wattage on the 12v rail? What are the specs? Most cheaper PSUs are so heavy on the 5v that you need a 500w unit to get enough amps on the 12v.

Well, you can always buy a high quality low wattage unit like a Seasonic.

What is most surprising is how little power a single card system draws, and this makes people ask themselves why they have 600W+ monsters in their similar systems. If you have an SLI system with a quad core processor, then 500-600W might be justified. I still think that 700W+ is a waste of money and possibly electricity (the efficiency curve yatta yatta), unless of course you have a peltier or several pumps or whatever.
