Regarding Unlocking the Athlon XP 1800+
1. Where can I find conductive silver lacquer? I'm assuming I can't get it locally, as I've had no luck thus far. Do I want the silver lacquer pen? If so, do I want the micro tip or standard tip?
2. Where are the best instructions for unlocking the XP located? It's my first time, and I'd like to have the most thorough instructions available. Thanks.

the instructions for unlocking the XP are at toms hardware:

Or check the sticky at the top of this section. :D
As for the silver lacquer pen try ur local electronic store (ie. frys, radio shake, etc) :p
and it looks like someones found a place online that sells it too:

Good Luck!

Well, I think $40 is a little excessive for silver lacquer, when the pens can be had for under $20 (assuming they work as well or better). Ok, I found Tom's written instructions. I was previously only seeing the video. Now, any recommendations/advice on the lacquer?

When will everyone understand that the superglue/conductive pen way of unlocking sucks! This is the easy, reversible way:
1. Get silicone thermal paste and spread it over the slits on the cpu so it goes all the way in.
2. Take a paper towel and wipe off excess
3. Get an eraser or alcohol and clean the 10 bridge dots.
4. Get silver CONDUCTIVE GREASE and connect the dots with a needle. It never dries so if you mess up, wipe off silver grease and repeat. No need to refill the slits, that will stay in there and it also will NEVER DRY
5. When you connect properly with the grease lightly put a piece of scotch tape over the bridges, press around the perimeter but not directly on the bridges.
6. Install and test CPU
7. If it works, enjoy, if not repeat steps 4-6.
8. Your welcome:D

I originally thought the same thing. If you go to the AS web site it says it is NON-CONDUCTIVE! So the answer is no, AS will not work.

hmm.. thats what i thought. :burn:
look in your yellow pages under "electronic equip and supls" or something similar. the ones that are piled highest with crap will have the best selection of cool stuff. the one i went to had 2 brands of conductive pens, the conductive grease, the laquer and two whole shelves of assorted used fans *drool*. anyway buy a loupe or one of those mounted magnifying lights and a 6pack (assuming you're old enough) good lighting and magnification are more important than the conductive compound you choose, and slamming a beer while setting up your work space will go a long way toward keeping your hands steady.
