View Full Version : Very Hot E6600 with uprated fan - what wrong??!!
Hi all,
Having a bit of problems with my processor temp. Currently using core temp and my e6600 is running at 2.8ghz at about 58/57 degrees c on idle and ~64 when running 3d mark 06.
My case has an exhaust fan at the back and a kind of tube that fits over the akasa cpu fan.
Bios cpu fan speed is approx 2170, i`m running this in Qfan mode
opt 3 fan speed (think this is the case fan) is running at 2100
cpu 50 deg and motherboard 40deg (also from bios).
Vcore is 1.37v (in bios)
This is with the side of my case off (on my brand new build!!).
Computer has been running for 15 mins from cold (running in bios)
Specs are as follows:
E6600
ASUS8800GTX
ASUS P5N32-E SLI plus (680i)
DDR2 2GB (667)
Akasa AK-961 cpu cooler
ez-cool 650w psu
my case looks very similar to this :

anybody got any ideas on how i could diagnose the reason for my high processor temps or anything i could do to lower them??
any help is greatly appreciated as i`m pretty gutted as its my brand new build

Might want to consider overriding Qfan and set it to 100% through BIOS. According to THIS REVIEW (http://www.frostytech.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=2033), your fan should spin up to 3400 RPM. You report it only at 2100. Again, get rid of Qfan.
Also... from what I am understanding, you say there is a duct that goes from your rear exhaust fan and covers over your Akasa cooler? Just guessing, but I assume your case exhaust fan is blowing out the back of the case drawing heat from the tube? Then your aftermarket CPU fan is blowing down towards the CPU, or is it blowing up through the tube? Reason I ask, is if the two fans are fighting one another, youre losing a lot of airflow.
Obviously your temps are high, but I really dont know what to expect out of that cooler. The heatsink is pretty small as far as aftermarket air cooling solutions go. The article also reports that fan at a whopping 60dBA, so unless you like the sound of a vacuum cleaner coming from your PC, I would consider something else.
My advice is to check out the Tuniq Tower 120.

Best of luck!

there`s a fan blowing air onto the heatsink and an exhaust fan extracting it, adjacent to this on the rear of The tube goes from the side panel of the case over the cpu so it extracts the air out in a rearwards direction. Theres also a fan at the front of the case bringing air in so i`m pretty sure that the airflow shouldn`t be a great problem.
Any other ideas?
cheers for the help!

I edited my post, see above comments about fan speed and disabling Qfan.
Also, I cant get that link to work where youre showing your PC case.
qfan is disabled and i`m getting 48 deg c when running at 2.4ghz with a fan speed of 3375rpm.
the tube goes over the cpu cooling fan to the side of the case, not the exhaust, so i`m guessing this is so the cpy draws in cold air as opposed to the ambient air in the case. Shall i try removing this ducting?
Cheers, ollie

No, the ducting bringing in cool air outside the side of the case is a good thing. Removing it will only circulate warm case air onto the CPU.
Is 48c running temp at idle or load? You need to try a program like Orthos for testing 100% cpu load and using that for testing temps. Idle and Full load is what everyone compares when tweaking, so temps when running 3dMark dont mean much.
If that is idle temps, I would look to recheck your mount on the CPU. Make sure to use a quality paste like Arctic Silver 5 (AS5) and avoid using the gunk thats plastered all over normal coolers. Make sure the cooler is seated firmly, evenly, and properly to the CPU. Many people have had to remount coolers for optimal mesh to get proper temps.
