Vista advise for Nortons 2006, get free Nortons 2007/ Cloudmark fix/ Disable UAC fix

Thinking about Vista and you use Nortons 2006?

Before you install VISTA to your XP or 2000 system, reading this thread will save you a lot of time, aggrevation and money. Nortons 2006 and other versions WILL NOT WORK ON VISTA, NOR CAN YOU INSTALL NORTONS 2006 TO A SYSTEM THAT HAS VISTA ON IT. It cannot be done.

Nortons does not have free phone support no more, so prior to installing Vista, go here:

http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoffice/themes/vista/compatibility.jsp

Then click on this link

This will prompt you to upgrade your nortons 2006 to Nortons 2007 for free for the remainder of your subscription. (Its also a way to get Nortons 2007 for free if you have Nortons 2006 or Nortons 2005, then you can run Nortons 2007, even if you dont install Vista. )

Now let's say you did this and are now running Vista and you now have Nortons 2007, MAKE SURE YOU WRITE DOWN THE NEW 2007 Product key, it will be different from your other key. This is the troubleshooting part of my post:

If after you activate, if a few days later there is another activation prompt, THIS IS THE SOLUTION.

SET YOUR SYSTEM CLOCK BACK 4 days, then under the activation, there is a button that says enter another activation number, enter the 2007 new product key, hit ok and then reset your clock to the proper time and date, I'm only posting this info as it's a known issue, I'm just saving youthe time of getting help from Symantec, since phone support now costs $30 <---Screw that)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is entirely a different matter, If after you install Vista and get tired of that UAC popup nonsense, here's the easiest way to disable UAC

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Do you use Cloudmark and Office? Cloudmark doesn't work with Vista? No problem, I have the answers!

Cloudmark just released a BETA for Office 2003 HERE three days ago, it's not supposed to work with Office 2007, but it works perfectly for Office 2003 and Office 2007 (They just changed this to reflect it does work with Office 2007 yesterday)

PS, I wasn't going to use Vista until SP1 is released, but I decided to set up 3 seperate hard drives and have Vista on 1 for testing, one to use and XP to fall back on.

Reason being, I will try to document all known issues that I encounter and the work arounds to make them work. This is post 1 dealing with Symantec's Vista issues and fixes Cloudmark fixes and how to disable UAC the easy way, when I have more issues and fixes, I'll condense them into one thread.

Next is Diskeeper and Nero :santa:

Here's my lovely chat with a Symantec live rep to get the fix

Manish: Sorry, in order to get the technical support help over the phone , you need to pay for it.

Manish: I apologize for the ongoing trouble you're having with this issue.

Manish: Please note that this issue may occur if some of the Norton files are not working.

Samuel_Green: Do you understand that if I totally uninstall Internet Security 2007, and try to reinstall Unternet Security 2006 then upgrade to 2007, I will not be able to proceed

Manish: In order to resolve this issue I suggest you to perform few steps. Shall we proceed?

Samuel_Green: Once Vista is on a system, you cannot install Norton 2006

Samuel_Green: ok I'll do what you say

Samuel_Green: Now it seems Nortons is on, what do I do? Change date back to Feb 10th and see what happens?

Manish: Do not worry.

Samuel_Green: Well it works now so I appreciate the help, hopefully this wont ask me to activate again, because if it does, I'm going to use Kapsersky

Samuel_Green: ok thx again

Manish: Thank you.

Samuel_Green: Have a nice weekend Manish

Manish: Is there anything else I can help you with?

Samuel_Green: Not today, thank you

Manish: Before we end the session, I wish to inform that you will be receiving a customer survey form in the next 2-3 days through email, where you can rate my performance on this session. Please spend two minutes of your valuable time to fill out this form. This will help me in improving my performance and gear-up my customer support skills.

Samuel_Green: Will do

Manish: Thank you.

You dont really use NIS do you?

Trend has a Vista version that is wonderful. I of course would reccomend there AntiVirus as I am not a fan of any companys "complete internet solution"

I'll be watching this thread for when I get Vista. I'm getting Vista through school here (for free, love being a CS major), and once school ends this summer I'll actually be installing it. Thanks for taking all this time SSS

I don't see how they are giving any free software upgrades for new Vista owners. I recently renewed my Systemworks 2006 subscription, and then shortly thereafter upgraded my computer to Vista Ultimate. All those links did was try and get me to purchase a new Norton Vista compatible software for the full price.

There's an alternative to completely disabling UAC, and that is to leave enabled the “Elevate without prompting” option... which means requests for elevation automatically succeed, without the prompt.

More secure way to disable UAC. Without losing Protected Mode IE

The registry edit linked to on the page above is as follows...
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"ConsentPromptBehaviorAdmin"=dword:00000000

LOL, The short answer is yes but with a good explanation, and only for 188 more days. Only running it because I am hard headed and they sent it to me for free after my wonderful experience with Nortions activation.

In 188 more days I will be using Kaspersky, I'd be using it now but Symantec keeps giving me more free months for my ongoing aggrevation..I've also noticed that when you run Nortons AV and say Zone Alarm for a free firewall, it had caused me issues, so I just said screw it and suck it up and run Symantecs all in one NIS so other programs work properly. I don't know if Nortons 2007 has rectified the issues I've seen, but not willing to pile on more aggrevation than I've gone through. In 188 more days my Symantec adventure will be over. ;)

This is because you didn't read what I wrote, you cannot get the upgrade after you've installed Vista, you have to do it when your running XP my friend.

If your using Nortons Anti Virus or Nortons Internet Security 2006, you need to go here before Vista is installed, this is why I started this thread to make people aware of what they need to do BEFORE Vista is installed.

After you go to the first link above, you then need to go here

I know this works because I've done it three times. If you install Vista first, it will prompt you to BUY the 2007 product

Hi Silver,

Thank you for the clarification. I certainly was mistaken. My problem is that I built a new computer and started with Vista Ultimate. So it looks like I'm out of luck. I did email Symantec to find out if I have any recourse or if they can refund some money back to me. If I have to, I'll then purchase a brand new 2007 version of their software. Thank you again.

I wouldn't run Norton even if it was free for life, I hate it. Eset's nod32 pwns all AV hands down IMO. I have Nero 7 working great as well as cloudmark. FYI I signed up with cloudmark when it was spamnet - they said it would ALWAYS be free, hello? NetZero? I have UAC disabled... I can't be bothered with it. I am running 64bit Ultimate BTW, if I were to get a virus or malware I would just REIMAGE! Another FYI, DriveImageXML works great with vista! Best imaging software IMO and free. http://runtime.org/dixml.htm

Mate... I think if you push them long enough and hard enough, you will get a decent resolution...

I had a similar expperience with Nortons 05 I think it was... I reformatted a few times and I think it was after 3 times, it wouldn't activate automatically again. I rang them and after speaking to about 5 different people, finally got a call back from someone there who had enough clout to add the days remaining to my new copy of Nortons 06.

What I am suggesting, is that if you do buy Nortons 07 and press them hard enough, they have the ability to add onto the 365 days, what you had left on your Nortons 06.

Hope that helps

Hi folks,

I contacted Symantec last night regarding my compatibility issue for my new install of Vista Ultimate. Surprisingly, they responded very fast considering it's a weekend. They have refunded my full subscription price that I actually renewed in November 2006, which has about 315 days left on it. Below is the response to me from them. Thanks folks for your help, especially Silversinksam for bringing this to my attention.

Hello Richard,

Thank you for contacting Symantec Online Customer Service. We appreciate the opportunity to assist you.

I understand from your email that you have upgrade to the Vista OS but unable to install the 200 version
of SystemWorks.

Richard, please note that this is a compatibility issue as 2006 range of products are not compatible to the Vista OS. Norton 2007 SystemWorks is currently under compatibility testing with Vista but please note that the 2007 version of Norton Internet Security and the Norton AntiVirus are compatible with the new OS. So you can opt to upgrade to this version.

Meanwhile, as requested, I have placed a refund request for you. A refund in the amount of $54.30(US) for the order number ********** will appear on the credit card statement within next 15 business days.

If you opt to upgrade to either of the products above, you can refer to the link above at our special upgrade link.

If you require further assistance, please let us know. It will be a pleasure to help you.

Is this safe? I don't mind running while in administrator mode and having to elevate for just about everything I do is annoying, will this get rid of the prompts without making me severely vulnerable?

In lieu of dropping UAC completely you can prevent it from dropping into "grey screen" when asking for credentials (pressing Ok)

Type secpol.msc in the search box (replaces Run box in XP)

Expand Local policies
Select Security Options
Scroll all the way down to
"User Account Control: Switch to secure desktop..." and select disabled.

Unlike disabling UAC completley you will not recieve a systray notification saying that your computer is at risk. But It saves some valuable miilliseconds when prompting for verification of administrative tasks.

You'll find (like I did) that when you d/l the 2007 version and install it, that the Antispam function isn't included.

It's an add-in pack that you can d/l from here... http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/custserv.nsf/docid/2006092616462646

It includes the parental control functionality also (for those of you that need that lol)

B

You know, that 2007 Add on pack is only for Windows XP right? The Add on pack for Nortons for Vista will be available by 30 March 2007

secpol.msc doesn't work in Home Premium or Home Basic. I *believe* it's only ultimate and business versions. It does not work for me on Home Premium.

Okay for Home users it requires a regedit :)

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Policies\System

Change PromptOnSecureDesktop to 0

(or search for PromptOnSecureDesktop) and change to 0

Will look to see how to disable systray notification for people that want to run without UAC at all (personally the secure desktop tweak is enough for me)
