my XP is keeping gently 1.2GB space, not much. My 98 tho, it's eating space as if it had an entire web server at it's disposition !

I must have a iso or something on there I can't find it and 3.5gigs is three times what it needs.

Do you have System Restore active and how big is your internet cache getting to be?

I've known Win2K to grow a bit larger than its install size but definately not that type of growth. FAT32 can take up alot more room than can NTFS as well but I can't justify 3 times the normal size.

Here is a new utility from PC Magazine that allows for visualization of the HD in a Pie chart. It is called Diskpie.

well my linux iso's were in the temp internet files but they weren't showing so I had to search and find them. delete them and now xp stands at 1.9 with a 200mb restore size(NTFS)

Turn off system restore. It'll make your system faster and eat less space. Use nortion ghost or back up to CD's instead.

I actually like Restore. I did an installation of a freeware program about two weeks ago. It slowed my XP down horribly. Restore did a great job of speeding me back up.

Rather than turning it off you can limit how much disk space it uses.

Start-All Programs-Accessories-System Tools-System Restore

Then with Restore open choose System Restore Settings. Then choose Settings. A Window will open with a slider that allows you to choose settings from 1 to 12 % of your hard disk space.

If you want to regain some hard disk space set the slider to 1% and reboot. Then if more Restore space is desired set it back up to a larger amount. Anytime you wish to regain space just set the slider back to 1%.

Check your pagefile and the hibernate (dont remember exact title) sizes. They are both multiples of your memory size and reserve hard drive space. Turning off hibernate will recover that reserved space and you can probably significantly reduce the pagefile size. Pagefile is the same as swapfile so it is just reserved space on your hard drive for swapping out data from memory.

If you do a search on this site for "pagefile" you will find the thread right under this one discusses some changes to the pagefile size. http://www.3dspotlight.com/tweaks/memory-winxp/ has a good article on changing pagefile size.
