Do to a saftey violation at work I received a unpaid vacation 9 days off. So what do you do when it snowing and raining freezing rain outside? You grab your 148 Opteron a razorblade and start cutting. when finished you have a naked 148 Opteron. Then you have a smoke and surf the internet:)

I started doing this to my pentium d the other day and gave up because it just wouldn't pop off.I didn't want to break it.

I'm not sure about your intel chip, but I know that intel solders the IHS. on some of there processors, maybe all of the new ones.

yea on the Pent Ds I know that is the case. So it's prolly better that you didn't get that thing off.

I saw on the internet that some times you have to take a blow touch to it if it has that solders and i was like no way.It must of had solder because i broke the seal all around and it just would not pop off.

For some reason, in my head blowtorch+cpu=no good

Well most solder is 400-550F melting temps, which is 260C. If CPUs survive 120C in operation, I'd suspect it could take the heat to get it off. You'd just have to look at the specs to see the max temps it can take while unpowered. For those asking 'how'd it get on then?', all a robot needs is a second to melt the solder, then cool it down. Much less risky than a man with a torch...

I wish I had the balls to remove the IHS on my Opty aswell. How long it take you, and were you sweating away? BTW hows the mounting of stuff on the naked core, do you feel like anything can crack it? And what temps you getting now? How many degrees you dropping by.

Not too long ago I tried to do this with my P4... the razor slipped and went straight into the top of my thumb.. about half the length of the razor was sticking in... so Im going to not do this ever again, I feel a lot safer lapping.

Haha congrats on the free vacation. If I have an accident I'm supposed to get a drug test and 3 days off but people only get the drug test, never the time off.

Looks like a success!

Good job :) It reminds me of the good ole' days when I removed the IHS on my K5 :D

What did you do at work to get a violation?
