hey everyone,

I want an upgrade right now, I have a Asus cusl2-c and a Celeron 700 mhz chip ( I know this chip is the worse of them all, i didn't know better back then). I don't wanna change the motherboard, I don't have the cash. So i'm planning to just buy a 850 celly (no more 800 in my store) and clock it to something over 1 Ghz.

A few questions:
1) Is there a CDO stepping for the 850 chip?
2) how far can i clock it with stock fan?

Thx

Yes, there is a cD0 stepping 850 Celery. Here are the S-Specs for the 850 cD0: SL54Q and SL5EC. You also might consider the cD0 Celeron 900; the cD0 stepping looks to be pretty oc'ing-friendly. The S-Spec codes for the 900 cD0 are: SL5LX and SL5MQ. BTW, all Celeron 900 procs are cD0 but they also have 2 S-Spec codes in cC0 stepping for the 850 procs, so you are not guarranteed a cD0 stepping. The 900 on a 133 bus is 1200, which should be very achievable with a cD0 processor.

generally you can squeeze out an extra 100Mhz using stock cooling

But sometimes you will get a good chip.....just peel off the thermal tape and use paste instead

Which one do you recommend then??...the 850 celly or the 900??...which one is better for o/c??

The cD0 C-850 "should" on the average overclock as high as the C-900, however not all C-850 CPUs are cD0 steppings. Therefore, it might be wise to buy the C-900 to be guaranteed to get a cD0 stepping, especially since there is not much of a price difference. You might also have a better chance to hit 1 gig using the retail HSF with the C-900. With a really good CPU cooler, 1.2+ gig might be within reach. If you do use the retail heatsink, consider lapping the sucker and definitely use thermal paste like Deez suggested. If you can't afford Arctic Silver, the Radio Shack silicone thermal paste is fairly good for the price.
