last night, i've forced to restart the system, 'cos my monitor won't come back on. i set the screen turn off after xx mins.

the problem is, when it restart, it can't boot into window???!!! it shows the boot up logo, after a long period of time, then it shown "Data reading error from drive C:" something like that. what does that mean????

first i thought my hard drive is dead. however, when i attach it to my other machine, it could access it, saw all the files. but i'm not booting from it tho. i thought window was crashed. so i went on to reinstall it. however, it did said scan disk found error and fixed. but when it either at "scanning the registery" or "copying the file for window setup", the system hang. it just stop from there.

now any one have any idea what's wrong w/ it??

i really don't want to reformat and reinstall all of my software, u know, it's a major PITA!! but if it's the case, how do i format the drive in command prompt? tried a:\format c but it doesn't work.

will a simple copy back certain window files into the disk would help?? what files??

need it back to before asap.....

It sounds like your boot sector has become corrupted. If you can place the HD in another machine you may be able to save all your important data. I would certainly check the HD with a virus checker, just incase something nasty has infected the Boot Sector.

If the drive is in anither machine, you should be able to format the HD from there. Just right click on the drive icon in My Computer. I'm sorry I can't think of any way of repairing the Boot Sector. Perhaps someone else has an idea?

i guess i would have to re-partition, re-format, re-install everything then....

btw, is it ok i back up all the data (win98 machine) into a XP machine running NSTF file system?? heard that might be a problem...??

You won't have a problem backing up FAT32 info to an NTFS file system. Just make sure it stays as FAT32 otherwise Win9x won't be able to see it.

i've talked to a local shop. they told me that the boot record might be damaged, and the registry as well.

now, they told me to do something like fdisk\mbr (master boot record) to repair it. also, they said after that, better turn back the previous registry too.

now, how do it do that?? any idea??

i know i should boot into the Doc mode, then type fdisk\mbr (?) but from where?? c:\winodw?? or a:\\??

how 'bout the registry?? he said registry scan. i'm not quite sure 'bout how to get it work tho? just type regscan?? or what??

now, it might not seems as bad as we thought.......no format, reinstall..........still crossing my finger....

scanreg /restore

That will bring up a list of reg backups for you to choose from.

I think the fdisk /mbr thing wipes the mbr clean. Might want to verify that before you do it.

You can run the FDISK command from anywhere. As long as you can get autoexec.bat to run... If you can't, FDISK is in the C:\Windows\Command directory.

Hope it works...

no, i'm sure he didn't mean just fdisk at all. otherwise, it'll just wipe my whole partition.

and tks Godfodda. now i know how to scan reg. and roll back.

but does anyone know anything 'bout the fdisk\mbr?? if it'll wipe it clean, will it rebuild itself? on next boot up?

does it sound as not serious as i've thought to u guys?? no reformat, reinstall the windows?? should be not too hard to fix w/out reinstall everything??

btw, i'm sure i WILL ghost it after it come back alive this time!!!!! learn my lesson!!!
