hard drive queries

I bought a new hdd to install win xp which worked fine, .after re-formatting my old drive i noticed in properties it stated that my old drive worked only in pio mode, , for the record it is a quantum fireball 30.4gb, 5400 ide drive , it works fine but is noticably slower at running software than my new maxtor which has the same spindle rate but is running in dma mode.

your thoughts will be appreciated

You can tell XP to use DMA by going into IDE controller (primary or secondary depending where your drive is) under System and Advanced.

i have tried that, it says enable dma mode if possible but it still runs in pio mode only whereas my other hdd is in dma mode fine under the same settings

how old is the cable, it could be the ribon cable u could try and swap them around or if this fails go into the bios and check if anything could be done from there.
