Hey guys,

Basically I'm trying to fix my girlfriends computer...and her windows wont update.

It has downloaded the update for Net Framework 1.1, but when it goes to install it, it just fails.

I have tried downloading the 1.1 file from the MS site and install manually, but it fails too.
EDIT: Just tried to install Framework 2 and it failed also.

Any ideas?

Thanks, ps2cho

The issue can be caused by a damaged .NET Framework component. At this time, let's refer to the following steps to troubleshoot this issue:

Step 1: Download Microsoft Windows Installer Cleanup utility
============================================

1. Visit: http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/9/D/E9D80355-7AB4-45B8-80E8-983A48D5E1BD/msicuu2.exe

2. Save the file to your computer.

3. Install this tool on your computer.

Step 2: Remove .NET Framework 1.1

==========================
1. Click Start -> (All) Programs->Windows Installer Clean Up.

2. See if you can find .Net Framework 1.1 software. If so, remove them.

3. Restart the computer and see if the problem still exists.

For more information, please refer to:

However, if you encounter a problem when trying to uninstall .NET Framework 1.1, we can also refer to the following Knowledge Base article to uninstall it manually.

After that, please restart the computer and perform the following suggestions to reinstall .NET Framework 1.1 and the updates for it.

Step 3: Install .NET Framework 1.1 Redistributable Package and .NET Framework 1.1 SP1

=================================================================
1. Please download the Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 Redistributable Package from the following link and save it to the C drive (C:\)

Also, there Norton Antivirus won't update either. Not sure if it is related...

Symantec Trusted Applications List fails to update with this error:
LU1845: This product was not updated due to a processing error. Click here for more information on this error
(The click here just goes to a FAQ list...very basic)

I chose to try to reinstall Norton...

Its definately something wrong with the windows installer because Norton says that it needs to be installed everytime...then at the very start of the program installation...It just says failed.

Arghhh!! What is wronggg?

Ok its definately Windows Installer, I just checked the services and it was stopped - Tried to start and it cannot find it.

How would I reinstall it?

I found a MS topic on how to delete and reinstall the service.

First I looked and saw that the registry key was pointing to some temporary folder....that was when I knew something was wrong and checked the service, which was stopped.

Found the article, deleted it, rebooted, reinstalled and boom updates and Norton reinstalled perfectly.

Job complete. Points earned with her parents ^^
