Just installed a new Seagate 320 gig Hd back up for my array.
I put the page file on the back up , thinking that would free up
the array for operational use. Is that a good idea ?

Yes, if possible, it is best to put the PF on another drive other than your C: Drive.
Try to put it on a drive that'son a different IDE controller if you use IDE still. If you have 2 IDE drives on one controller, they share bandwidth, which slows things down.
If it's SATA shouldn't be an issue anyways, as they're usually not sharing any bandwidth.

does anyone know actual numerical benefits of having a pf on another drive on a different controller?

They are all SATA drives , the array is on the promise controller and the back up
is on the VIA controller which is where the page file is on
