ABit KT7a with no BIOS updates - upgraded from Duron 800 to Athlon 1133. Wont work at any speed with 133 FSB or 124 FSB (keeping PCI/AGP within spec), but works fine with 100 FSB (850MHz). I cleared the CMOS for 30 seconds and loaded the fail-safe options, but the most it will do is boot into Win Me with a frozen mouse. Should I reinstall windows?
Sorrry to hear you :(
There must be a jumper on your MOBO try to set it to 133FSB
What kind of memory do you have? I would also recommend downloading a new bios. At least 3R! Make sure your not increasing your FSB with the FSB+ option.

The Duron runs on a 100 mhz FSB and as such you may have 100 mhz SDRAM memory fitted to your system which may stop you from running a 133 mhz FSB depending upon its quality, You may need to upgrade to 133 mhz SDRAM. What bios settings are you currently using ?

ah, it was the BIOS. it was dated december last year, and im sure AMD had 266 Athlons out by then? thanks for the help guys! im really glad i found this kewl forum :)

updated the bios to latest revision, and still no joy. it will not run at 133/266 FSB, and yes my ram is PC133 CAS2. i have intel network card and SB 1024 in my PCI slots - nothing else...
is there a jumper of the board that allows you to select between 100mhz chips and 133mhz chips? if there is, and it's still set to 100mhz for the duron, then that would be causing your problems.
What are your settings in SOFT MENU III? We got the same MoBo & maybe I can help you out a little.

Are you thinking memory settings? That or the FSB is way to high? I guess it could be a lot of things!:(

branney - Pls. type it out as you see it in SOFT MENU III.

no jumpers on the board. memory timings set to host clock (so 100 or 133 depending) and latency of 3 (capable of 2).
cpu 40C, system 25C, fan 5300rpm
1.78V, 3.41V, 4.92V, 12.18V
cpu 850(100) as loaded by fail-safe defaults
multiplier x8.5
fsb/pci 100/33
fsb+ 0
power 1.75 (default)
fast decode no
output auto
cpu strength 1
it should have
1133(133)
x8.5
133/33
it is not even stable at 7x133=933 and temps are ok
do you think i should increase the cpu drive strength manually?

Don't worry about that! Your volts and temps look good. Is the chip brand new?
Edit: I just checked in my manual and said cpu drive strength default is 2.
List your setting in Soft Menu 3 like asked, because your multi is 8.5..Your system is doing 8.5x100=850 it should be 8.5x133 u should be abe to run at 133, the KT7a doesnt detect 133 fsb cpus, only the multi, there should be like a list of speed going from 500 up past 1300 (maybe depending on BIOS version) ust select your cpu and it should run..otherwise its something else.
CPU OPERATING SPEED = USER DEFINE
MULTIPLIER FACTOR = X 8.5
CPU FSB/PCI CLOCK = 133/33MHz
CPU FSB PLUS = 1
SPEED ERROR HOLD = DISABLED
CORE VOLTAGE = SET TO 1.75V TO WHAT YOU MONITOR IN WINDOWS USING VIAhm
I/O VOLTAGE = 3.5V
FAST CPU COMMAND DECODE = FAST
CPU DRIVE STRENGTH = 2
ENHANCE CHIP PERFORMANCE = DIABLED(ENABLE WHEN STABLE)
FORCE 4 WAY INTERLEAVE = DIABLED(ENABLE WHEN STABLE)
ENABLE 4 K PAGE MODE = DIABLED(ENABLE WHEN STABLE)
DRAM CLOCK = HOSTCLK
Try these settings & tell us what happens
Make sure that you do have a KT7A. You never know if the place you bought it from is pulling a fast one on you & if you know what the #s & letters on the core is let us know. If you don't then don't bother taking the HSF off.
Ive been away from my KT7a for to long *SNIFF*
But getting another soon!

sonny, sorry i didnt type it exactly. i was already typing as you posted again!
angry, it is a KT7A version 1.0 with NEW athlon 1133. i didnt know it wouldnt auto-detect, however i tried selecting all sorts of speeds - both the ones it knows and manually.
i will try CPU DRIVE STRENGTH 2. i assume CPU FSB + 1 is irrelevant? will try anyway

just for info, i was also getting occasional windows protection errors when booting, even at 850mhz. anyway, set CPU DRIVE STRENGTH to 2 instead of AUTO (1), and i am now typing this, even as it is running at 1000/133!! WOOHOO!! :) will try some games and let u know - thanx guys (if it isnt too soon)

well Grand Prix Legends was fine at 1000/133, and CPU was 44C. tried 1200/133 and did not boot. now on 1133/133 with CPU DRIVE at 3, and it is working, but i got an exception as it was booting into windows. should i just reinstall windows?

hey branney, i noticed you said your 5v was running at 4.92v when you were only at 850mhz.
could you please tell me what your 5v line is running when you attempt to run at 1133mhz?
also, can you tell me what power supply you are using?
i've found that by not having enough juice, i would often get windows errors when loading. that happened on two different situations with me on my kt7a.
1) when i had my vcore too low. but yours seems to be fine.
2) when my 5v line dropped too low. which yours seems low already only running at 850.
post back and we'll see if that has anything to do with it.

seems to be working better now with (another) fresh install of windows. the PSU is 300W, and at 1133MHz i am getting 4.88V

My TFT monitor is connected to my Tower via a male to female power lead. Is this a pass-through from the mains, or will it steal power from my PSU?

hey branney
welll...4.88 is obviously below spec for the 5v line, but i dont think that should be enough to cause problems.
when you actually read the 4.88v, was it just in bios? or was it under full load of the cpu?
my 5v line will drop a bit when i overclock and/or use the cpu under full load. but once again, 4.88 SHOULD be adequate, even considering in a small drop for load. my 5v on my old PSU started crapping out at under 4.85v.
as far as your pass thru, i dont believe it should affect the power at all. but, having never tried it, it wouldn't hurt to try plugging it into its own outlet in the wall to test.

another thing you might try if you think that your 5v line is too low: lower your vcore manually by a notch or two at a time. the lower the vcore, the less heat produced by the cpu (a nice bonus). however, some cpu's dont take well to undervolting them (wont cause damage, just might not post or bootup errors).
my t-bird 1.2 can drop several notches below the default and still run fine (while i'm not overclocking), but some processors might not like it.
anyhow, if you lower the vcore, that will put less of a demand on your 5v line. if you can successfully lower the vcore and the 5v line improves, check system stability.
also note however, that the two reasons i would get bootup errors (wpe, bsod, etc), LOW vcore was one as well as LOW 5v.
so lowering one to raise the other may just give you more of the windows bootup errors.
hope this helps, and keep us posted
