I am currently working on building my machine.I know I know this is heard a lot. I was wondering if you couldgiveme anypointers on products etc..mostly fans is what I am worried about. specs to be:
300W power supply(i know low but i cant return it now)Mid-Tower
Athlon XP 1700+-1800+ (not sure yet)
512MB DDR SDRAM from crucial
Radeon 8500 series
Soundblaster..dontknow what model
ABit KG7 Mobo 266mhz bus speed
40GIG Western digital 7200rpm Hard Drive
24x10x40 CD-RW Plextor drive
10x(?) DVD- drive with 40xnormal CD read
standerd floppy
Any suggestions? changes? Ideas? mostly worried about a heatsink, and system cooling.
:D
Couple of YS-Tech 48.5CFM 80mm fans (considering that is the size your fan mounts support in the case) and either an SK6 heat sink with a Delta fan or a Millenium Glaciator II (not as loud as the Delta and an excellent cooler) should get you set up.
Add more fans if needed depending on the room for them in your case or if you're going to be modding it for more.
Most of this stuff can be found at SVCompucycle (http://www.svcompucycle.com) which I find to have the best price/shipping combo.
First, allow me to give you the obligatory "Welcome to the Forums!"
Your proposed setup looks pretty good. As far as fans go, you should let us know how aggressively you intend to overclock your rig. Stock fans that come with Retail Athlons are pretty lame, but if you don't intend to push the CPU much, they are (barely) adequate. I would direct you to the overclockers.com home page and look up the hints and tips sections to get yourself a starting point so you can ask more detailed questions after you figure out where you want to go.

SB Live or better. Get speakers w/ subwoofer.
DVD drive with faster cd read speed.
Cooling: I use 4 80mm generic case fans, a blue orb video card hsf, a Thermaltake Volcano 7 CPU HSF, and a Thermaltake ram cooling clip. My Enermax 431w PSU has 2 fans, and my chipset's northbridge has it's own fan. Idle @37 C, load @44-45 C

Didn't see you mention a case yet so I'll suggest the addtronics line www.addtronics.com they are incredible and many consider them to be the Ferrari of computer cases.
I second the idea of getting great speakers, especially with a system like that. Try the Logitech z560's. Everyone has been raving about them, saying they are the Klipsch equal at more than 1/2 the price.
Good luck and just post here if you have any technical issues once you put your system together.

Check out this site it has a ton of good info on the KG7:

you might want to consider the KR7A it has the kt266a chipset.
welcome to the forums and have fun building your new system:beer:
Edit: one more thing get the Audigy sound card.

Thanx for all the support guys, but I got a couple of questions.
I got a new case, found one for a lil more money but worth it...it is an Antec Full tower with 3cooling fans + one for the HDD and a Enermax 330W PS...from newegg.com I have the motherboard,HDD, and floppy installed. I plugged my Vid card into the only slot it would fit into :) and the sound card (Audigy GamerX) into one of the expansion slots...i have the box for the audigy(not OEM) but I dont have the cables to connect to the CD-RW drive and the DVD...where can i get those?
Also A question about the power supply, After hooking up the fans with the lil adapter things(pardon me) is it possible that there will be unused cables? one where nothing will hook into it? just wondering:)
And my case, I went in to mount the CD-RW and an online manuel said to use the "tension clips" I didnt get any tension clips! What should i do? i have already contacted newegg in hopes they just forgot them, but can I buy them somewhere!?
My new main fear is not fans anymore :) is the power supply, does everything have a place to hook up? etc etc...also would it be wise to get a RAM cooler? becuase i am now going to run an Athlon XP 1900+:D thanx in advance guys, it has already been a lot of help:burn:
Usually IDE cables should come with drives, such as the CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, and hard drive.
With the power supply, there should be some connectors left over, unless you pack that bad boy full of fans. Some fans even come with a hook up so you can daisy chain the fans. But you might not wanna chain too many of them.
What is the model of the case you have? Some cases need clips, others don't. Some just have screw holes that you put the screws through, and into the threaded holes in the sides of the drives. Check into that.
A RAM cooler has nothing to do with the processor. It cools the ram. You're probably using DDR ram, but cooling it is entirely up to your discretion. You probably don't need to cool it if you're not overclocking it. But you ALWAYS need to cool the processor.
