What's faster or more reliable? By Ethernet I mean Realtek 8139 like the typical onboard stuff. In my case, it's Abit IS7-E integrated LAN running in performance mode. As for USB, it's 2.0. Theoretically, that should be faster, but the support folks told me to switch from USB to RJ45 for stability and maybe also speed. I don't really feel much difference, though. It cost like two bucks, the cable, but since I already have both cables, USB and Ethernet:

Do I gain anything from switching to RJ45?
If so, does it exceed the benefit of having the Ethernet adapter switched off in BIOS?

Thanks in advance.

If you are referring to hooking up a cable modem to your PC via Ethernet or USB, just stick to Ethernet. Technically, USB2.0 is faster than your Fast Ethernet (100 mbps), however your internet connection is probably much slower than 100 mbps, so just stick with Ethernet: its the standard, its what it was made for.

I'd definitely go with ethernet. USB is probably taking some CPU time, especially when the connection is kind of loaded.

And as for USB being faster, unless you have an internet connection that is faster than 100megabit, it won't matter.
