My brother just got a dsl connection through msn and qwest.
With it he got a crappy arescom netdsl 1300 external modem. Since he doesn't know very much about computers, I set it up for him. I got it up and running fine using the rj45 connection straight to his computer. :)

Next I tried to connect the modem to the router. The dsl router is a Trendnet TW100-S4W1CA. It's a router and a 4-port switch all in one. I followed all of the instructions in the crappy manual and no matter what I tried, I couldn't get it working.

I don't really know too much about the arescom modem. His internet connection uses PPPoE, and the modem has this built in, so you don't have to ever enter a username or password. Is there a possibility that with PPPoE built in that it will not work with a router. The config software that the router came with requires a username and password when PPPoE is selected.

Is there a way to ping the external modem to see what IP address it is sending so I can select static mode in the router's config software? What mode should I use for the ruoter?

I'm going over to his house tonight to work on it. I just downloaded a new bios for the router. The bios is said to be for the "B" version only. I will find out what version his is when I get there, and if it is "B" I will flash it to the noewer version.

Routers can be tricky. My manual, for my D-Link Router was almost useless. It didn't bother to mention the most important thing to get mine working...cloning the mac address.

Anyway, to find the ip address, run "winipcfg". That will give you all of the info that you need, including the ip address, the mac address, subnet mask, etc. Usually this info is entered into the router, and the computer will be given a new ip address from the router.

Thanks. I'll give it a try. (not gonna be there til tonight though)
Say, what do u think about the modems PPPoE built in feature?
Do u think the ruoter needs to be set up as a static ip?

DSL ISP's usually assign you a temporary IP address, even when you're always connected. I doubt that MSN will be willing or able to rent you a static IP. If possible, talk to MSN's tech support. Hopefully, you won't need to buy Qwest's "approved" DSL modem/router. Then again, Cisco 678's cost less than the Cisco 675 did.
