Hey guys, I picked up a Cisco 2500 router from an old coworker of mine about a year ago. He showed me how to get into the consol and all but I cant seem to access it anymore. I have the cisco rollover cable and the db9 adaptor that we used to connect to it when I bought it. He even reset the password before he gave it to me. I try connecting to it 9600/8/no parity/1 stop bits/ no flow control using hyperterminal. Then I turn the router on and I get nothing. The ok light is on I can hear the fans, the ethernet adapters light up. I tried getting an ip address from it with my laptop from both ethernet ports, no luck. I've also tried this on 4 pc's two with onboard serial ports and two with a usb>serial adapter.
Is there some sort of hard reset for this router? I'm lost. :bang head
Try this..

It will reset your passwords though.
It takes those a while to get up and running, so give it some time.
Make sure you are connected to the console port. Make sure you are using the correct COM port on the PC in Hyperterminal. Try them all just to be sure. It won't act as a DHCP server (give you an IP) unless you have done a configuration for it to. The default config for these is basically no config. You should just get a prompt like Router> or asked if you want to step through a basic config to get IPs on the interfaces.

I've only got one com port showing up in my list (wich is correct). I tried the "break procedure" and still nothing shows up after like 5 minutes. Its deffinitly plugged into the console port. Maybe I'll have to find another cable to try. I have the cisco config maker software installed and even that cant detect the router. I think I'm gonna open her up and see if there is anything I can reseat inside the router.

you could make your own. its literally the easiest cable ever, aside from straight through.
It sounds like it is infact something with the serial. can you try it on another serial? And when using hyperterm, use the defaults button. its nice and quick

I'm gonna make a new cable out of some spare cat 5 I have. Reseating the nvram and such didnt do anything last night. Hopefully its just the cable. :)
