View Full Version : k6-2 stuck to heatsink
I wanna take a heatsink off a k6-2 in an old compaq, but it's glued on or something and I can't pry it off, will sticking it in the fridge help loosen it up?

I think the thermal pad melted (pretty sure cuz I had that once.....K6-2 550).
To get it of you need to use pretty much force, sticking it in the fridge might make it a bit easier.
BUT since its a Compaq you never know, they might have glued it on the CPU.
Good Luck
thanks ;)
I've had in the freezer for a about 10 minutes now, I'll try and pry it off with a flathead screw driver in an hour
Try twisting it off first, and if you use the driver make sure you don't hit any traces or components on the circuit board with the opposite edge of it.

i still dont remmber the model , but i rember that i also had trouble takeing the heatsink off , some cooler master HSF
i didnt have to frezz it or any thing , just use a handy dandy screw driver to pop it off , and it had some weird blue stufff as thermal compound * shrugs *
Got the heatsink off with some prying after I took it out of the freezer, and then I took the heatspreader off! (this was not easy!) Without the spreader it looks a lot like a k7 with a slightly smaller die.

I popped the HSF off my old 450 Mhz K6-2 from my old compaq as well....difficult to get off...The blue glue easily scraped off the HSF though...I wasn't worried if i screwed it up though...i was just playing around...but i had to use a screwdriver as well...compaq had them suckers on there good and tight
