View Full Version : That's what friends are for!
YEA!! Just today, my best friend said that he would run SETI. He said that he's willing to get his 1.2 T-Bird (I think it's 1.2...) running under my name! That's so nice!!! I may just start moving UP in the rankings now!
The weridest thing is, he just said it out of the blue... Talking about something COMPLETELY unrelated durring lunch, and he starts talking about bringing his removable HD (he dosen't have the internet :( ) and crunching SETI. I get to supply all the caching software and SETI itself, along with all the WUs.
Quick question:
How many WUs should I get for a weeks worth of processing for his 1.2 T-Bird? I was thinking 100, but I honestly have no idea at all.
I'm so happy!!!

That's great!
Also, if it's not overclocked, a 1.2GHz will pull close to 35 WUs a week.
I'd say 30 would be plenty if it's not overclocked.
Great news! Good luck with the setup. :)

I finally managed to persuade a friend to join The Oc'ers Forums last night. Within 3Hrs of him starting, he was online ordering a new case with 350W PSU and a 64Mb graphics card. As he was ordering, I noticed he had placed an order for a stick of 256Mb PC2100 RAM. Very strange I thought, as his system only takes PC133. It's not a gift, but a loan as he knows I needed it, Iam a little low on funds at the moment. A true friend.
Thanks Dataman

FYI, my old T-Bird @ 1066 could do 'bout 4.x WUs a day. i would say any where from 30-35WUs cache should be fine.
my GF's 1.0G Athlon4 laptop ave. 'bout 5.8hrs/WU w/ AV. range of 0.4xx and since she's still using dail-up. i've cached 35WU on it. so, all i need to do is to ask her to bring the laptop over at my house once a week so i could upload all the WUs and cache again...:D
btw, does anyone know if let the laptop crunching SETI 24/7 is a good idea?? i mean overheating and life-span of the laptop is what i'm concerning....... i really don't wanna kill her brand new laptop!! she sure WILL kill me afterward!!!!
especially TC, u r running SETI on ur Dell PIII-M 1.13 right?? do u run it 24/7?? or let it on most of the time???
I wondered about running SETI on a laptop 24/7 as well...I think the longest I've left my laptop running is 2 days while crunching, I'm a bit concerned about overheating...
Anyone have some insight?

I've been having my laptop crunching for, oh, a really long time now (I turn it off when I take it somewhere, which isn't often) and I haven't really had a problem with it at all. :)

I don't run seti on my laptop 24/7 for this reason. I keep all my important data on it, and it has no warrenty left on it. I would say if you have a warrenty don't worry about it.
