View Full Version : Small question about temperatures.

I have a Core 2 Duo E6400, with stock heatsink and no overclocking at the moment. I went out and bought some filters because I cleaned my computer out today after only two months and it was pretty dusty. Anyways, I added the filters in and decided to monitor the temperatures.

I started off using the bios, and then I used multiple programs; AI Suite, PC Probe II, Speed Fan, TaT and Core Temp., most of them registered the CPU temperature around 50c at idle. Now, are the temperatures normal for a filter covered system, or should I think about investing in a aftermarket heatsink to provide a bit more cooling?

I do plan on getting a new heatsink in the future, but if it seemed my computer needed, I would get it much much sooner. Hence why I decided to ask. Thank you in advanced, of course.

50c @ idle without an oc is very hot for this chip have you tryed taking the filters out to see what temps you get, if the readings are similar then i think the heatsink neads reseating.

It use to be in the 40's, but after putting in an 8800GTS, the temps went up to 49c-50c. What would you say I should be getting temperature wise?

EDIT: These are the temperatures I'm getting.
AI Suite - 49c
PC Probe II - 50c
Speed Fan - 49c
TaT - 44/46c
Core Temp - 44/45c

You should still be getting 40's there is not enough airflow going through your case with the 8800gts it is just adding heat which is not being removed. Eather you nead higher cfm fans or better still cut a blow hole in the top of the case to help drag out the heat. If you check the case modding section you will find a lot of info on improving airflow through your case.

That's insane. Something has to be off somewhere. I have 1 filter in front of my 1 intake fan, which is 120mm. I have an E6600 at 3.6GHz with an SI-128 and 120mm 2500rpm Panaflo. I forget what it idles at, but it's definitely lower than 50°C. Doing F@H under full load, temps are in the high 50s.

One intake, one exhaust. Both of them 120mm and about 1600rpm. Filter in front of the intake. It sounds like a rather lackluster setup, but even still, it gets pretty acceptable temperatures.

Should I turn one of my two intakes into an outake and see if theres a change in temperature?
Also, I forgot to add. I use pretty standard fans because I prefer a more quiet machine.

What case do you have?

My e6600 idles mid-30's. Also make sure the heatsink is on correctly.

Front intake, rear/top exhaust. How's your cable management?

My cable management is clean, most wires sit at the bottom, and there aren't much else where. Also, I have a Sunbeam Silent Storm. It has front and side intake, and an exhaust plus my HX520.

I'm gonna try turning m side intake to an exhaust and see if it changes.

Show us some pics of your system, then maybe we can decide what for you to do? :)

I don't really have a camera.
I use my loves, and it takes her forever to transfer them anyways. But, I decided to go into my case and clean a bit out and decided to push the pins for the heatsink again and it looks like it's registering around 43/44c on idle; 46c is the highest so far and 61c on full load. Oh, and this is also on the stock thermal pad. I didn't bother putting AS on until after I get a new one.

This looking better?

Wow, 50c is way too hot at idle, I'm only 28c idle with a room temp of 21c.

It went up to 48c.
I think tomorrow if I have some time I'm going to take everything apart and give it another go.
