Yes, the ST6-R has a RAID controller which for the price is worth getting. Even if you don't use the RAID, it still gives you two more IDE channels so you can run a total of 8 IDE devices instead of 4.
 
It's a way to link up multiple harddrives, The three most common RAID configurations are RAID 0 (striped), RAID 1 (mirrored), and RAID 0+1, (striped and mirrored). For example, if you use two 20 gig harddrives striped together, they act like one 40 gig drive that runs faster because part of a file is saved to each drive. This speeds up access times and is faster than a single drive. Mirrored drived backs up your data. Anytime you save a file to one drive, it is also saved to the other drive. If either drive crashes in a mirrored RAID system, you have not lost anything. You can also use 4 drives in a striped and mirrored RAID configuration for performance and data security.
