Here're some images that might save you the time of installing and configuring VM tools.
I did this with PC-BSD and it just booted right up preinstalled in the VM.
Remember the image needs to be 64bit Linux to work.
Our own OCF FAH VMWare installation guide:

That's what I use on my VMs at work and one at home. Work just fine.
Looks good thanks guys.:)

Pardon my VMware ignorance, you're running PC-BSD as the host o/s on 64 bit hardware, and are running a pre-installed 64 bit Linux VM image? That's exactlly what I'm wanting to do.

Pick one of the 64bit Linux flavors and then check for the 32bit-lib folder. If not then you'll have to get and install them however your distro of choice likes it.
There are Ubuntu 6.10 images with the tools installed already. All you have to do is apt-get the 32bit-lib.

Yes, I just wanted to use PC-BSD or FreeBSD as the host, and run a 64 bit linux distro as the guest for SMP. Got caught up in wishful thinking; at present there's no VMware to run with BSD as host, that I'm aware of.

If there were, I'd be running BSD as my host OS.
Maybe someday...
However I'm going to set Gentoo as a dual boot with XP and install XP as the guest OS with access to the NTFS partitions. Gaming won't be much fun but everything else should work. Full screen it and the wife will never notice she's in Linux. OTOH I might set up Linux as the primary desktop and let her get used to it. As long as she can surf with Fire Fox, play solitaire, MahJongg and do her email, she'll be good to go.

Too bad we couldn't just run a FreeBSD flag, and fold SMP on 6.2 (more wishful thinking).

Sticky material ?
Link to guide maybe?

Bump to the top for new potential SMP_FAH folders.

I don't see why you can't run FAH SMP in *BSD. As splat explained to me once, the PC-BSD and FreeBSD and I think NetBSD all offer linux emulation, allowing for native linux apps to work with very little performance hit under BSD.
Splat would have a better idea about how to get it to work but I believe it is possible.
(Note: When I say emulation, I'm talking like WINE, not VMWare)

SMP_FAH needs 64bit Linux with 32bit-lib installed.
I don't think BSD can emulate that just yet.
The only hope is for VMWare to support BSD as a host OS.
If they ever do, I'm going to run Windows in a VM instead of BSD LOL.

I don't know why they are dragging their feet on VMWare to support BSD as a host OS.

I don't know why they are dragging their feet on VMWare to support BSD as a host OS. :confused:I guess they consider it a favor to even support Linux. BSD just doesn't have the numbers or very vocal user/supporters yet.
I'd even consider paying for a BSD version as long as it wasn't selling at enterprise prices.
I'm looking at eventually getting Vista but not if I hear of too many restrictive DRM issues as time goes on. I don't game much if at all so DX10 isn't a must have but I'd better darn well be able to play any media I've legally purchased on my PC.
OTOH Beryl and XGL are very good accelerated graphical environments and getting better. BSD should have no problems supporting these.
The 32bit Linux SMP clients should arrive before the Windows SMP clients and then BSD can most likely run them without the need of a VM.

QEMU supports BSD as the host OS..just though I'd throw that out there.

Yea, I'd be willing to pay a reasonable amount as well.
If Pande group launches a 32bit Linux SMP client, it would give a new lease-on-life to my Dell dual xeon rig! ;)
