Ok, I got a 24 port switch that I want to sell on eBay but I want to test it before I sell it. Is there any way to test it without having to set up a test network in my room and have to manually go through every port to check for connectivity. Please tell me there is an easier way.

This usually goes for all telcom and networking equipment: When you plug the thing in, they device will preform a self-test, aka POST. All the LED's should come on and a couple lights might flash. If you have a manual for the device, look to see if there's a list of error codes.

But if you're selling it, you really should check each port to see if they work. There are several easy ways to do this. You can use a crossover and plug it into one port and then plug the other end into all the others and see if the link light comes on. You should then hook two computers up to afew random ports and see if the switch will pass packets.

Thanks man. This switch is a Cisco 2950T and it also has two gigabit uplink ports. How can I test the uplink ports?

As a suggestion you MIGHT want to try the classies here if you can see them first. You may get a better deal out of it.

I might do that before I go to eBay, but I really want to make sure it all works before I would even consider selling it to someone on the forums here. I care about the quality of stuff I sell in the classifieds here unlike on eBay, I could care less.

Anyone know how I could test those uplink ports though?

One more reason not to buy on ebay. Acompdude, I'm sure you're not the only one that feels this way.

It is a Cisco 2950T 24 port switch with two gigabit uplink ports.

And for what Captain Helghas said, I know for a fact that there are many people that do not care about the quality of stuff that they sell because I have bought many iffy quality items that were described as excellent condition. I am not saying that I would purposely sell a bad item on eBay its just that I have now gotten to a point where I just dont care as much just like many other people on eBay. However unlike many people on eBay I actually DO describe the things I sell in as great detail as I can. If I know an item has a problem I will say it in the auction and if I have not tested an item I will state it in the auction etc... My point is that I treat people as I am treated and if people on eBay want to be that way then I will return the favor.

You know I wish everyone was a nice as the people here on the forums. EBay would be a lot better if everyone was a great as the people here. WOOT for this forum!!!!!

Ok, rant done now. Any help with the switch would be helpful.

Uplink ports are exactly the same as all the rest of the ports on that switch, just gigabit speed. You can test them the same way.

One bit, on those you can disable a switch in the software and it would look as if it wasn't working when tested as described here. Best option is to just use a console connection to login and do some show commands to see what is what. at the very least a show tech would identify if there were major problems.
