Will RJ45 Conectors designed for standed cable work on solid?
I have seen many RJ45 conectors specified as being for standed CAT 5 cable but i have yet to find somewhere that sells non amp RJ45 conectors for solid CAT5 Cable.

Check for "solid cat5" on google. There are a couple of places that sell some. Saw shielded and AMP. Not sure if the shielded is whar you're looking for or not.
I couldn't, however, determine what solid cat5 was, exactly. Would you please clarify that for me? :)

Here is what I gleaned from a search of news groups
There's more to it than just flexibility and cost! Solid UTP should be
used for the horizontal cabling (from the patch panel to the work area
outlet). Stranded UTP should be used or patch cords only. The stranded
wire has greater attenuation (resistance) and thus diminishes the the 100
meter rule for horizontal wiring. Patch cords use stranded to be more
flexible and not break the wire at the modular connectors, but they should
not exceed 3 meters total. If you're crimping your own patch cables, be
sure to specify mod taps for stranded wire. They are different than for
solid! If in doubt, find a cable contractor or an RCDD (Registered
communications distribution designer)

So how crucial is it to use the right RJ45's for solid core cat 5 cable what are the diferenecs in the way the cable is crimped as i am haveing trouble finding finding non AMP solid core cable conectors.
cheers ill look on gogle but i have already searched for non amp RJ45's that are designed for Solid core cable.
What is wrong with AMP connectors? They will work fine on solid cat5.
they will work but your better off with solid connectors for the way they penetarte the cat5
stranded pokes through it where as solid will 'wrap' around it..

the problem with amp conectors is that they are different to other conectors and require a different crimping tool. Can i get new dies for mycrimping tool for cob conectors so i can use amp ones. also in the uk i am finding it difficult to find ones designed for solid core cable.

solid vs stranded CAT 5
Solid cat 5 is usualy used in "virticle runs" which are be tween the MDF and IDF (Main and Independent Distribution Facility) it's ment for punchdown blocks, not really for patch cables,
Stranded CAT 5 can be used for horizontal runs, going from the IDF to your pc, it's not ment for punchdown blocks but is great for patch cables (more flexable for one thing).
As for the RJ45 ends, there are defenet differences between the solid and stranded cable ends. It is possable to use one for the other but it is VERY unrecomended, the connection is poor and you may run into connection losses for no aparent reason.
I use stranded and very rarely have bad connections. I've wired 6 buildings without TOO many problems.
Makes me wish wireless was around when I was doing this.

wireless is a joke i would only use it for sharing broadband internet access as it has a max speed of only 12Mbits/sec and then thats not conidering your next door neighbor has a dect phone which he more than likely does. When gigabit over twisted pair is becoming affordable i think wireless is mainly for the lazy people who can be bothered to route cables or people who have no wireing or routing skills.
and dont forget that wirless operates as a shared mediam like a bus becuase the data can not be sent just to one computer like with guided media networks it has to be transmitted into the air in which anyone can therefore receive.
I thought our planet had a enough electromagnetic polution without people generating more when they could be using a faster more reliable and cheaper guided media network.
well that my 1p's worth

Wireless is nasty! it has very low security, the security that it does have can be circumvented very easily (most wireless nic's allow you to change it's MAC address from software!!!!!)
For people in apartments who can't do anything about wireing, I would actually consider running CAT 5 accross the floor instead of using wireless, as a network admin I would keep any wireless part seperated from the rest of the network vea firewall's.
If you had to use it, I would find some personal firewall software that allowed you limit access by ip address and MAC address, it's not a total solution, but it keeps the hackers out of your network!
