Yeh , this is all over at Fatwallet too .

Even the Compusa by me that is a BRAND NEW (built) store , seems to be closing . Do the "store locator" at thier website and you'll find out what stores will be remaining .

Wow. Comp is basically pulling out of Michigan. Kind of sad for me, because I worked at one of their stores for nearly 5 years. This chain will be completely gone in the not too distant future. The Fry's, Best Buys and Newegg's of the world are killing it. Circuit City will be next.

It sounds like no word on any deals yet, but checking that list the last Comp USA here are getting axed. Oh well at least a Micro Center still exists if I ever actually need to visit it.

Sucks for the employees but that's how it works, you are expendable especially when the owner is selling at loss.

My brother talked to one of the manager's today at the Oceanside Calif store and was told the closing stores are to be gone within two months time .

*NOTE*

He was also told that everything being sold from now on at closing stores will most likely be unavailable for any kind a store returns ; meaning , that once you bought it ... its yours for good . Ask your store clerks about this BEFORE you make any purchases . My brother made a small purchase today from that same closing store (SATA/IDE cables) , and the receipt specifically said "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" !!! .

I was just at the Aleaxandria store by Landmark 4 days ago to get 2 Antec Tricool fans. It didn't look like it was about to close, still plenty of merch on the shelves. I got a great price on my Antec 900 case at the Vienna store in early January, but haven't been back since. Which locations are closing? Both?

AFAIK, Landmark is but not yet, I was there today and talked to a few employees that all said that most are closing but no one knew when or what was being done ahead of time and probably wouldnt for awhile.

i went to the one closing in roseville mn. No deals whatsoever. I asked some of the employees and they seem to think they will actually have deals in a month. No MIR offers on the shelves AT ALL which is the only thing that makes their prices ok normally. Right now the only thing that affects us is that all sales are final and that you cannot buy service plans or anything.

Rav
02-28-07, 09:13 PM
The stores aren't closing for 90 days, the best deals will be near the end.

If your CompUSA has a Tech Shop, ask the tech manager if they have any parts to sell. Very likely they have a lot of useful stuff sitting back there that isn't even in inventory.

I used to work at CompUSA, and from what I saw in middle-upper management, its no wonder this happened. Lots of red tape, run-arounds, pointless systems of paperwork and just the wrong people running things. Its too bad since there were a lot of good regular employees I worked with.

Its typical of the thinking of CompUSSR management. A backwards list where you have to figure it out by a process of elimination. No wonder they are on the downhill slide to bankruptcy

299.99 for a 500GB HD? These guys have to be the stupidet managers on the planet.

Yep. At Newegg it's $139.99 plus $15.99 shipping, which is a typical price for it. I drove out to Vienna and picked one up for $79.99 plus a few bucks in sales tax. Fantastic deal. My new Conroe rig looks sweet in this case.

Agreed. I went yesterday and most stuff was 10-20% off. CPU's and mobo's were 20% off, which was kinda cool. I think I'm going to hold out and see if they drop more. If not, eh, oh well.

Fr3@k3r
03-02-07, 07:25 PM
Like i was saying in another thread on another forum..

Compusa Does not put everything at 50-70% automatically.

They start at a low % off, than it starts to increase as the weeks go by.

as the last 2 weeks come, you will see 70-90% off but with not much stuff that you would want available.

i know this because ive been thru this before with compusa and some of their stores closing.

Man o Man, closest one to me now is 82 miles away. Pretty incredible that they don't have one in the city. Actually Chicago doesn't have nearly enough PC stores. Lots of gamers and lots of money to be blown here. Sometimes the best thing to do when in search of quality parts around here without the wait is to go on craigslist.

I went today and it was crap. There was no advertisement outside but signs everywhere inside that said up to 20% off. All hard drives were 10% off, but still cheaper at fry's. 20% off motherboards, 10% off a few video cards, TVs, cases, laptops, and a few other things. Nothing was really worth standing in the long line for though. I went looking for some ram but ended up going to fry's and buying it there instead

I really cant believe they are closing their Chicago and Schaumburg stores here in Illinois. Both stores were always packed with people, literally.

Something else has to be going on other than just a downsize/realignment. Id bet both those stores were the top money makers in the Midwest if not the majority of the country, we just don't have PC stores out here in great quantity.

Seems like the place you'd want to dig in and hold your ground.

If you look at whats left almost every one of the stores staying open is out in the sticks. In other words no competition. Makes it a lot easier to sell 500GB HD for 299.99

Hardly. The 2 I used to frequent are in NH. I go over the boarder because there's no sales tax. Anyways, those 2 are in some of the bussiest shopping areas arond here. Hell, one of them is even in the same exact parking lot as a Best Buy.

We had one close a while back. After a few weeks you will see the prices really drop and few good deals can be had. I bought some stuff and sold it on ebay for a profit. Not bad but you have to wait. As I work swing shift I can usually be there when the store just opens. Buddy up with an assistant manager and he will tell you when the price drop days are.

I went to the CompUSA in Niles, IL.

The problem is I went there looking for "something"... but CompUSA never had "anything" worth buying. I found that even after 20 or thirty percent off everything was still overpriced... and nothing in their inventory merited an actual purchase... at the very least nothing I would ever go to that type of a store for.

So I bought a copy of "Monster" with Christina Ricci marked down from 6.99 to like thirty cents...to prepare me for Black Snake Moan. and a 40 percent off DC car adapter for my laptop for about 11 bucks. That's all I could stomach.

Adragontattoo
03-05-07, 07:01 AM
Uh Monster was probably the WORST movie you could have picked to get ready for black snake moan. A better movie would have been Prozac Nation.

I plan on going over tomorrow to see what deals they have. Ill start going once a week or so up until the end.

Wow I went and what deals! 20-30% off their 50+% price increases! You can still get a better deal ordering from online retailers.

Maybe the last few days of their closings, prices might drop more.

I did have to buy a sata drive though, my ide drive took a dump. Didn't want to wait ordering from newegg.

My experience has been similar to the rest posting here. I went with RogerDugans to one store this weekend and was surprised at the 20% max prices. Nothing there, even with the discount was worth getting.

Roger goes up to one employee and asks "So, how long are you planing on stay open?" The kid replied, "60 to 90 days." Roger then said, "So, I should come back in a couple of months to get the real prices they should be now then, right?" The guy just growled and walked away. Seriously, I actually heard him growl! ;) Lol. I felt bad for the guy but Roger was right, the prices were horrible. And this person I'm sure would feel the same way, if he did not work for CompUSA. :bday:

I talked to this one kid:

"So how long you been working here?"
"Two months. I *just* came over from Best Buy. I haven't even had my first evaluation yet."
"Damn... That sucks dude. So what are you going to do now?"
"Find another job... hopefully."

Interesting too was all MS/Vista OS software (retail box) was 10% off , with prices reflecting true retail prices (not CrapUsa inflated) . Not bad considering its hard to get ANY deal on Microsoft operating systems .

Interesting too was all MS/Vista OS software (retail box) was 10% off , with prices reflecting true retail prices (not CrapUsa inflated) . Not bad considering its hard to get ANY deal on Microsoft operating systems .

Unless you look at DELL. They only have 1 line of Desktops with XP on it now. And a decent setup of that, is like $800. (Tryin to find some for employees here)

They have Razer Mice and Keyboards. Saw the diamoundback, copperhead, and the habu. I'll probably buy some Razer gear. With 5% off now its almost retail price. When its about the 89th day ill raid the place.

Well we do have a Microcenter near the north side on Elston, and Fry's Electronics is only about 15 miles away from Chicago downtown.

Some of the Best Buy's are somewhat knowledgeable on things, laptop prices are good because they don't do MIR.

Didn't that Microcenter used to be elec-tek or something like that? We also have 2 tiger directs just southwest of the city. I didn't know about Fry's though, thanks.

I guess I take back what I said. I was just going on the fact that when I built my PC I sure didn't know they were around. Its to bad because I went with what the local small store had in stock.

As far as Best Buy's go I agree. Some seem to have fairly knowledgeable people. The Niles store though, is just pitiful. I grew up in Park Ridge so I used to go there a lot before I moved into the city. Now I think the closest BB is on North Ave.

The old CompUSA I used to go to was on Touhy out near Skokie I think.

well I missed this thread while I was down for a while upgrading my desktop. I'll have to swing by one or two of the Atlanta ones next month when i go down there. I'm surprised they are closing all of the Atlanta locations.

Microcenter is far better than CompUSA anyway when it comes to buying computer parts. They actually have parts, not just flashy electronics.

Still not a lot of good deals. The "tech parts" section is discounted 30%, so you can get some decent prices on cooling stuff. Too bad they don't have Scythe or Thermalright. I'd rather see my microcenter go out of business. They have a better parts department.

Just went to a store that was closing that is next door.

Only thing that snagged my attention was a couple of core2 duo boxes in the 30% off locked up area. They had them bumped up to $279 as the regular price, so yer not saving much, but after all is said and done it would be $175 or so.

A little bit cheaper than the egg, but not much.

Looks like $20ish

I stopped in at my local Comp on the way home last night. Whole store is still 10 to 30% off and not much is worth buying yet imo. The tech department was hit pretty hard and barely anything is left, but even @ 30% off there were really no deals. Not sure who is buying that overpriced merchandise. The software is picked over pretty good too (it was condensed to 1/2 of the normal area), but it's only 10% off. I'll probably wait a couple weeks before heading back. Maybe they'll have actual deals by then.

Joe Six-pack and Ms. Wine-cooler that are buying it, because they are still learning what the internet is and how to use it, and thats why they don't know about the Egg or here. Buy the time we get a good discount, I'm affraid most the morons walking the store will have bought most of the good stuff overpriced to us, but cheap to them.

Edit: Best deal I've seen so far was BFG 1000W PSU for 30% off sticker price was $299, after the mark down+tax was still about $40 cheaper than the Egg prior to shipping and after a MIR. I almost bought all five across two stores and sold on ebay but never did.

By the time ours has a discount worth checking in on, I'd say everything will be gone. People around here can be morons. Just a billion copies of TurboTax and Burning Crusade. I picked up the 3rd to last copy of Vista Home Basic upgrade for $85. The only version of Vista with any quantity left was Ultimate full.

Overall I agree with Jon. By the time the prices get low enough to actually be a deal (for the tech savvy) there won't be anything left :bang head I had hoped to pick up a cheap PCI express card, but I can tell already it ain't gonna happen.

I've been to a local one for the last two weekends with similar results. 10%-30% which is totally not worth it (but people suck this over-priced stuff up like idiots). I did see signs that indicated that there would be another price drop next weekend. For instance, I'd see labels showing a sale price that also showed a further discount as of a certain date, most of which were like 4/4, 4/7, around there.) Still not major savings though.

I'd also encourage people to haggle if you see something your interested in. Make an offer. The worst they could say is no. Especially since all sales are final and they would rather move the stuff.

and then it died on me. went to take it back, and they pointed to the part of my receipt that said "ALL SALES FINAL"

I proceeded to violently cuss myself out for doing something so stupid. Could have found that thing online for alot cheaper, but I 'needed it now' and am now stuck with a linksys piece of garbage.

Just be careful...

I went to the Lenox ATL., Perimiter ATL., and Cobb ATL. All of them Suck, nothing competivly priced, Perimiter ATL has socket 939 boards plus AMD 300+ 939 for like 200 bundle. Lots of Vista and Office htough, Apple Section is TOTALLY empty

I actually grabbed a 520W PSU at mine last weekend. It was mistakingly marked at $69.99 (the 500W were marked 79.99). I got an additional 30% off, so it was less than $60.

A better deal could be had online, but I had ordered one that was DOA, so I was desperate.

I just went to the one in Schaumburg, IL, and most prices are still marked down by 20%. Motherboards and some other computer hardware is marked 20 to 40 percent off, making them close to retail prices or the same. Nothing too interesting though. Geforce 5xxx cards, x300, x1300, stuff like that. Some cheap motherboards.

Books are 40% off. Too bad that a lot of them are really outdated (Office 97, iMac guide book from around 2000, lol).

20% off on all games. Not too many new ones.

I got the very last one in Dublin, CA. I was using my cell phone to surf the prices on Newegg.com to compare and make sure i was getting a good deal. COMPUSA was very expensive to begin with and it is sad they had to knock of 40% of the price to make them even compare to Fry's or Newegg. I still can not believe they had that SHARK Case for only $60.. its $160 on most websites.

Some other things of interest that were also on sale for those interested..

XBOX 360 at 20% off (you NEVER see a game console on sale)
Windows Vista 20% off (still not as cheap as OEM, though)
Various AMD Processers/MB's at 30-40% off

I stopped in at lunch this afternoon. The one near me is at 20-50% off now, and hardly anything is left. In fact, when I first walked in I thought the store had no power. Turned out that they just have all the lights off except a few at the very front of the store, where the remaining merchandise is. Absolutely nothing worth buying, it's all still too expensive. Everything good is still only 20 or 25% off, which is a good 10% higher than internet pricing.

I took a visit over to mine. What a waste of time. I was looking for discounted bawls, looks like they were all picked up around 5% or 10% off. Anything decent like Razer mice/keyboards/headsets were both beat up and over priced. As i was leaving i saw a nice big sign "all sales are final". I would open up the stuff at the register if i bought anything. Looks like people are taking stuff and beating some stuff up. I saw a few nice cases. No price tags, and i was sure someone had put a dent or two into them.

By me on Friday, stopped in 20-50% off. Most everything was cleaned out. 30% off Vista, not bad. Picked up some DVD-R's, cheaper than online for premium brands about dang time. Was half tempted to ask the store manager I'd take a load of DL disks if he cut a good deal more.

They arent stopping you from opening stuff, I did open up a tarantula in front of three employees with no issues.

Free extra keys and key removal tool in the box (2nd set) and after repackaging it, I have it at home now.

They were selling fixtures for half off. I picked up a big printer encasement they ripped the printer out of. I am turning it into a huge airbrush/spray paint booth. On wheels and has storage space. Soundproof it and put my aircompressor in there with a cooling fan and I can paint while inside my condo. The encasement was only 25 bucks.

My local CompUSA still had a lot of stuff, but even with the discounts most of it was still horrendously overpriced.

My dad picked up a bunch of Vista Business copies for his office, and some Office.

The best deal I picked up was a Belkin 4 port KVM that happened to be in a $3 bin :). Other than that some AS5 for $5 and an IDE to notebook IDE adapter.

They had crazy prices on their old bench equipment, old video cards were all marked $25, I mean $25 for a TNT2 or Rage XL 8MB? A DVD-ROM was $40.

Probably used by the inventory people in the back, or in the office room.

So has Best Buy and online shopping been driving Compusa into the grave or what?

I went 3 days ago and it was 50-70% with alot of stuff, today it was 70-90 and was slim pickins.

Burning Crusade for $8
Game Guides for $1-$2

Lots of damaged stuff with no discount,Some DDR2 1gb for $30,some rambus 256 for $40 which made me laugh, lots of expensive apple software reduced to almost nothing, final cut,Mac Office.

I didn't want to risk buying expensive software not knowing potential resale value on ebay and I wish knew more about mac software. They had some final cut programs reduced from $1400 to $300,mac office for $50 and alot of other expensive apple software.

today was the last day of business for the one adjacent to my work. whole store was 90% off.

i picked up these (before tax prices):

1 saitek p990 gamepad, $1
2 x 512mb pny ddr2-667, $14
3 netgear wpn311 pci cards, $9 apiece
aftermarket car charger for my cell phone, $1.50

as soon as i had checked out, they announced "95% off your order when you buy 6 items or more." i was pretty irked at that - "all sales are final"
