View Full Version : a thought: cool basement+oc'd system=?
Hey guys, I was just thinking about moving my system to the basement and was wondering if anyone else in here has already done this. My basement is very cool all year round! But, I am a bit concerned about the possibility of humidity. How could I determin if it's too humid in my basement? It's not finished and the walls are insulated from the middle up, leaving half of the walls bare concrete. There floors are also bare concrete but I could slap in some carpet no problem. Any thoughts?

Humidity isn't much of an issue if you're not cooling below ambient, or using a humidity based cooling system (bong for example) though I'm not postive that it has ill effects on that.
I did that, myself.
It will lead to your basement being warmer than before. :D

or if you live in the uk like me i might try putting my case out side - super sky bong yeh (rain)
Stick a dehumidifier in the computer room of choice

Thats what I have sone. My girlfriend moved in and kicked out of my second bedroom that I was using for my office an I got booted to the basement. Needless to say I live in Minnesota and it gets kinda chilly down there this time of year. I think having the puter on the cold concrete and in cool ambiant air could only help your overclocking cause. My basement isn't finished or insulated but I do run a dehumidifyer. To stay warm on those long cold nights of surfing, I do have an electric heater that I use to supplement heat. I have noticed a few degrees increase in my temps with the heater on as compared to with it off. Next im tempted to move everything over and use my dryer duct to duct cold winter air into my computer and see what kind of performance I get. Go for It, the cool air can only help.
Cheers
If i was to get a dehumidifier, how big would it have to be and where whould be the best place to put it. I'd like to add that my basement has no rooms because it is unfinished. Would putting it right next to my desk be sufficient enough?

Not really needed, condensation is rarely a problem. I have mine in the basement, Usually hovers between 16 and 19 degrees ambient... I was keeping a Duron 750@927, 1.8V right around 33-35 load with a Zalman CNPS-5000+ in normal mode, so yes, the cooler ambient temps do make a difference. If you're really worried about condensation, just lift your PC up off the ground a bit with a box or something...

I wouldn't worry too much about the humidity either but if you do deciede to get a dehumidifier they do produce heat so you wouldn't want to put it next to the computer, that would defeat the purpose of any gains of cooler room temp. i like my dehumidifier just because it makes the basement that much more comfortable especially since ive started to spend so much more time in front of my computer. For me its a comofort factor-no musty smell and good for my storage items.
Cheers!
I've got mine in the basement.. Completely unfinished too.. Bare concrete all around.. No problems so far.. It's been down here over 2yrs now... I think the warmest it's been (middle of summer) was about 75F.
i don't think i'll get a humidifier then... i guess it would be too much anyways... temps are looking better now than when it was upstairs. it run even better with side panel off but i don't think i'd want bugs making there new home in my case, so i keep it closed for now.
thanks for all the help!:D
