View Full Version : 80mm fan on a SK-6

As you know, the SK-6 is one of the best fans that clips on to the CPU. In general, 60mm fans are a bit on the loud side. Since the SK-6 does not use any screws, it's tough to mount a 80mm to 60mm adapter on it.

Has anyone successfully put an 80mm fan on a SK-6? If so, can you show us how you did it?

One person mentioned this, but it's a little vague:
For the Sk-6 to use a 80mm fan all you need to do is set the 80mm fan on like normal and then turn it 45 degrees. Slide the fan down alittle and clip the top wire bracket then slide the fan up to clip the bottom bracket. Then you can shift it around abit to get it centered over the heatsink.

I personally am running a Sunon 60mm (http://www.plycon.com/sunon60.htm) at 7 volts. Idle temp is 42 degrees. It's very quiet, but I know I can get lower temps with an 80mm.

Sure, I'm going to copy/paste what I did:

I have a 1.4 TBird and I'm using a Thermaltake SK-6 with 80mm Sunon Super High Output 50cfm rigged onto it (the 60mm fans just didn't cut it, even at 40 cfm)

Btw, the 80mm on the SK-6 lowered my CPU temps by 2C (over a 60mm 40 cfm) and made my PC much quieter, probably cools memory and other chips some more, too.

I used one of the big clamps and one of the small clamps with the corners of the fan under the clamps and used twisty ties to hold the clamps together.

I wish I had a picture but I sold the PC to a friend. I'll get her to send me a pic maybe.

You have to mount the heatsink to the cpu first, make sure you have the clamps on because one of them can't be added once mounted.

Basically, you pull the clamps together to hold the fan in place and you're running two twisty ties (or cable ties if you choose but they might be too short) each running through the top of the clamps, one on each side, maybe one in the middle too. You can work it so there's no risk of the ties touching the fan or use a grill maybe.

Its a little tricky but not too hard. Play around with it and you'll get it. It works better than a 60-80 adapter in my experience probably since the fan is closer to the heat sink and allows better airflow (more room to pull air towards the heatsink). And also the SK-6 rocks, especially compared to the low-performing Coolmaster I tried the 60-80 with.

i am planning on changing the delta fan to my original fan on my SK-6, (delta is way to loud for me, i swear its like a mini hair blow dryer, i even pretend like im drying my hair when i turn my computer on) but my regular fan is like half an inch tall, and my delta fan is like and inche tall, so will i have problems putting in the new fan??

Sounds like you'll have to use the smaller set of clips that came with the SK-6, dunno. It includes clips for 60mm x 25mm and 60mm x 35mm fans. Hope that helps..

Sounds like a nice mod!!! I'm going to have to try it.

i put a 80mm 50cfm "extreme output" Sunon on my SK-6. Turned 45 degrees, using both 25mm clips. I did run some electrical tape around the fan, just so the clips stay in place. they don't "clip" on as well as they do with the 60 x 25mm fans.

I used this in an earlier thread:

I got worse temps when I took off my Delta 60 MM and put on an 80 MM Sunon 50 CFMer. Even with more CFM, I got 2 degree worse cooling. Too bad as it was quieter than the Delta of course. I used the smaller clips on this too. It was stable on the heatsink for sure.

Talk about sadistic, I put ANOTHER 60 MM Delta in my case to cool my video card! I got it on a baybus so I turn it on only when gaming really, but it is L-O-U-D with both in there and with my 6 other case fans. Keeps me cool though.

Use the 80CFM delta, that WILL drop temps!

I wanna do it when I get the SK6, if it doesn't break the clips so I can't put the 60mm back on!!!

Is it sucure with a 80MM fan?

As I said, when I put the 80 mm on the sk-6 it was fine, totally secure, and it didn't do anything to the clips. I switched back and forth to compare a few times and the clips are still tight.

I don't think anyone was using an 80 CFM but an 80 MM fan. 80 CFM on the heatsink would be nice...nice and loud.

has anyone done a comparison of SK6 + 80mm vs glaciator 2? I'm still debating which way to go.

note: lack of money makes you SAVOR each and every drop of OC project you can do ;)

What is the Glaciator 2? Pics cost info please.

Im gonna put a 80CFM fan on me SK6!!!!

there are reviews right at the top of the main site's HSF section.

Well, here's an update on what I just did. (Keep in mind that my goal is to run my XP 1600+ quietly as possible, no overclocking.)

I took an 80mm to 60mm plastic adapter and drilled 4 extra holes in it. I then took some wire, and wired it to the SK-6.

Now with a Sunon 80 mm fan blowing on the fan I was idling at 41 degrees. I reversed the fan to suck air away from the heat sink and it dropped to 37 degrees.

In conclusion, I love the SK-6, but I don't like the fact that there are no mounting screws for fans or adapters. I have ordered the new Vantec CCK-6027D (http://www.vantecusa.com/cck6027d.html).

[H]ard|OCP (http://www.hardocp.com/reviews/cooling/roundup1101/index5.html) recently rated it best all-around HSF. It was quieter than the SK-6, scored almost as good, and it has mounting screws for fans.

I'll be putting a 92mm to 60mm adapter on that to see how quiet I can get it.

I just ordered the Alpha 8045 its the best one out there, put the 65 cfm fan on it (80cfm doesn't do much better and it twice as loud) and then I'll be cool!!!!!
