View Full Version : Good under $100 motherboard to OC an E6400

I currently have an Intel Reference Board DG965WH with an E6400 Core 2 Duo.
So far it's ****ed me off on 3 fronts:
1) I can't overclock it
2) I can't install most 'performance memory' (The first three sets of performance brand memory didn't work well, had to buy Kingston Value Ram)
3) I can't overclock it...
I don't want to go nuts on getting a super duper motherboard.
I just want to get my E6400 up to around 2.8ghz and I've got a BFG Tech 7950GT video card.
I'm checking NewEgg, but I don't really know who to go with on motherboards anymore... I've always used the reference boards, but the stability of the overclocked Core 2 Duos seems impressive enough to try it.
oh, and should I use the E6300 I have or the E6400 I have when OCing?
I do not think I'll be going SLI, but it's a SMALL possibility if the 7950GT becomes cheap enough
First welcome to the OC forums:welcome::welcome:
Thats a tuff call I think we have all been looking for a good OCing MOBO under $100
The 60$ Asrock in my sig can get you 300mghz. thats about it.
Its alot easier if you looked for a good OCing MOBO under 200$.
I settled on the P5B deluxe along with a ton of others folks(In other words I copied:))This one is a pretty reasonable price compared to alot of others.Seems 250$ is getting to be the norm, and I don't think they offer any more OC then this one.
You can get your e6400 above 3ghz easy with it. Pay no attention to my OC I just got it in Sat. letting it burn in for a week.
Sorry I couldn't answer your question any better.

I couldn't find any of those P5B motherboards on newegg.
Besides these?

that looks pretty good. except it's not Core 2 Duo compatible...
I guess I should say 'Around $100 or under'
like up to $150 would be acceptable too
I just want to make sure the motherboard can be overclocked AND be stable.

A little bit more than 100, but you won't regret buying it.
It can overclock.
Accepts high end ram and kingston value ram :)
It can overclock
Go for the highest overclock. OC both cpus and see which one will run at the highest speed.
If you have crap ram oc your e6400 since it has a 9x multiplier

Its the same board, its just sold for a lot cheaper because someone opened it and then returned it to newegg.
I think what you are thinking about is when people talk about OEMs like Dell who sell full computers but limit overclocking settings in the bios.
I think what you are thinking about is when people talk about OEMs like Dell who sell full computers but limit overclocking settings in the bios.
OEM's are not like prebuilt computers but for a company who needs to cut costs a little bit or just doenst feel like making the product outsource the product and have other companies like evga or msi to make the boards while still using the original companies instructions lol to put it into lamence terms

I see the DS3 mentioned (good board, I have one), but what about the S3? $99.99 at ClubIT.
I had one of those too and it was a good board, but I had to return it for the DS3 I have now.

I think 965 pt is good for the price. There are refurbished Biostars at Newegg for $60.
Another vote for the S3. I'm very happy with mine. If you plan to really push the FSB high you may need better cooling for the NB though.

if you want the option for SLI, then yes.
Abit IP35-E at newegg for $110 ($70 after $40 mail in rebate).
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813127031
No firewire or RAID. Also, no SLI or Crossfire.
The abit Ip35-e is $69 after rebate here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813127031
I got one coming, and a buddy has one and it clocks like crazy for the price. Heck, its only $83 before the rebate.

A few people told me to look at these:
Gigabyte GA-965P-S3 (http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/mainboards/display/ga-965p-s3.html)
Gigabyte FA-965P-DQ6 (http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/mainboards/display/ga-965p-dq6.html)
ASUS Commando (http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/mainboards/display/asus-commando.html)
I'm looking at this one right now GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128012)

IMO not now with the 9xxx line coming this Q4.
chapel976
08-30-07, 10:01 AM
I just realised the Asus Commando and that Gigabyte DQ6 is way over my price range.
I really DON'T want to do SLI... too much power, too much noise, too much heat. I'd rather keep it simple and just have ONE good card. So SLI isn't important, but being able to get my C2D E6400 stably to around 3ghz.

08-30-07, 10:14 AM
i would go with the IP35-E nadro posted or look at the Gigabyte P35-S3L or P35-DS3L.
the P965-dsx's are an older chipset they are good yes but for the price there is no reason to get an old chipset when you can get a P35 based mobo in your price range.

Ok, here's my basket...
BFG Tech BFGRINF650iU LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 650i Ultra (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813189005)

GIGABYTE GA-N650SLI-DS4 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 650i (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128044)
These two are at the top of my list
MSI P6N SLI Platinum LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 650i (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16813130081)
GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16813128012)
I don't plan on using SLI, so the 650is half assed SLI system is fine for me as long as it can comfortably overclock my E6400

actually, I WAS wondering about that
the P35s are the newest chipsets?
how would you compare the P35s to the nForce 650i?
Evilsizer
08-30-07, 10:45 AM
600's run alot hotter even when not oc compared to P35. P35 is hitting alot higher fsb then any current 600 chipset. still in a single video card rig i would take a P35 base system over 650i. just depends some places in the world have 650i's cheaper then p965/p35 so its really what is cheaper for you to get. since you only want 3ghz oc you can get that with either chipset without a problem.

p35 can use ddr3 but if you get a board that has both then you better hope to not have to increase the ddr2/3 volts. one guy that i have seen so far has fried ram cause of that hybrid board. just go with ddr2 atm, ddr3 wont be ready till mid next year.
either of these is more then enough

There are only a few mobos which have both DDR2 and DDR3 slots though. I wouldn't be too worried about that honestly. The best boards for around your price have already been mentioned - the Gigabyte P35-DS3 and the Abit IP35.

It's very possible that the launch of the X38 chipsets will chop the legs out of the P35 market too.

it wont X38 is suppose to be in the 200-300 price range so.... still though if you want to option of CF then look at X38, 3 pci-e 2.0 slots and some new goodies. there are also gonna be ddr2 and ddr3 based x38 motherboards.

If the X38 is going for the $200-300 range, I'm hoping some of the $200 P35 chipsets will go down a little.

nah they wont drop from what they are now, its pretty much the same. new release prices are high due to demand. after about 1-2months after release they drop a bit, about the only thing you might see on some boards would be a MIR thats about it.

08-31-07, 09:27 AM
Well, now you only want 3ghz. Once you get your board and get moving and hear other people's reports you'll have the "bug" and want as much as you can get. The DS3R is a good board though, I'd probably recommend that as well.
I'd also recommended staying far away from DDR3 at the moment. You'll pay a premium for RAM that you just do not need at all.
chapel976
08-31-07, 10:50 AM
yeah.
well, I mean, I want to go as far and as safely as I can go with my OCing, but 3ghz is my lower level of where I want to be.
I wonder how much ram speed will be needed to keep up with a video card at 1 teraflop. Doesnt seem in line with the through put of the rest of the system, Like dual Gigabit ethernet on the same bus doesn't. I don't think X38 will be a massive boon to oc'ing. I'm sure boards will have advantages and then NV will answer with some new advanced chipset made for this 9 series card, possibly going with the Barcelona if its anything like its supposed to be. NV liked dealing with AMD, I think it made them feel bigger.
