Hey,
I'm about to start overclocking a new setup with a Xeon 3060, 8800 GTX and badaxe 2 motherboard. I ran 3dMark06 on stock settings, and I got less than 1 fps on both cpu tests, and in CPUz, the multi kept changing from 9x to 6x and back. Anyone know anything about this?

Thats normal. 1FPS is max for CPU test.

Speedstep, I believe is why your multiplier is changing, but I'm still not sure what SpeedStep does, so thats just a guess.

My question, why are you gaming with a server CPU?

The Xeon's tend to have a lower vid if I remember right. Also Xeons tend to have a higher chance of being great CPUs. They want their server CPUs to be good ;).

Speedstep takes the multi and drops it to minimum when the system is at idle to save on power and heat.

You might want to pose that question to everyone with an opteron too

I cant believe someone asked that with the huge number of people gaming on 939 Opterons round here

The Xeon 3060s are supposedly hand-picked E6600s. Although, they apparently overclock to the same levels.

Yep, all perfectly normal. The 3DMark06 CPU tests are designed to be brutal. I believe the majority of CPU's out there don't even see 1 FPS. :p

The 9x to 6x is EIST, should be able to disable that from BIOS.

i have gotten up to 2fps maby a 3 but for half a sec on this monstrosity of a rig

:eh?:

On my old Barton rig, I used to get 1-2fps on the CPU test on 3DMark05.

Thanks for the responses. I have another question. What kind of voltage is considered safe for these Xeons? Also, the bios says it's giving it 1.325v, but CPUz reports about 1.21v. What's up with that?

CPU-Z's vcore detection is more or less broken. I hear the newest version is good till 1.35v but still...best to ignore it completely.

05 != 06

What should I use to monitor the voltage? The Intel utility keeps crashing.

What voltage is safe?

nothing will really give you a true reading of the vcore. cpuz can be close, but once you go over around 1.43v, it revers back to always saying 1.225v or something.

IMO, all volts are safe, it depends on your temps. you will become temp limited before you become vcore limited. most people on air use around 1.35-1.55v.
