last week, i bought a BFG 7800GS from a local Fry's... that card has a G70 chipset... last Friday, i found the same card on Newegg for cheaper and i decided to buy that one and will return the one from Fry's...

i got the one from Newegg today... when i installed it, it had the G71 chipset, but the difference is, this card from Newegg is reporting memory speed at 625mhz on both ATI Tool and the Nvidia control panel... the one from Fry's with the G70 chip reported the full DDR speed of 1250mhz... is this correct or am i missing something...?

also, i noticed that the G71 is idling much cooler than the G70... i have the fans set at 59% cause that is the highest fan speed that i can stand the noise level... at this fan speed, the G70 was idling at 49C... the G71 is only at 44C... both cards are running at stock speed...

The G71 cuts the mem in half 625x2=1250, the G71 runs cooler because it is running at only 1.1v.

i just started overclocking the card and the G71 is amazing... ATI Tool found max at around 545 core but there are some artifacts so i set it to 520mhz... i then let ATI Tool find memory speed and it got up to 840mhz but there was a lot of artifacts so i set it to 800... right now, the ATI Tool artifact test is running without any errors at 520/800...! the G70 was struggling at only 450/650... at that speed, the G70 still had artifacts...
