Wii haters rejoice, you finally have somebody in your corner....
However, he states that "Nintendo is only interested in making fun games".. Well DUH!!!! You'd rather have a game that's pretty but is a bore or no fun to play? Some people just don't get it

I can see why developers would be frustrated with Nintendo... especially on the online front. That's pretty much when a lot of major developers just STOPPED producing games for the Gamecube...

Not really, the lack of development for the Cube was really more of a holdover from Nintendo's super retrictive 3 party licensing from the 64. The loosened up somewhat on the Cube, but by then the developers had pretty much shyed away. The Wii isn't really the best machine for a multi-platform release. It's better suited toward exclusives, and with the numbers of homes with Wii's growing everyday, I have no doubts that the developers will deliver, if Nintendo lets them.

Nintendo= FUN! Always has always WILL!

Plus the WII is the closest system out there that make the player interact with the games they play. I doubt nintendo made this system to compete with the power of the 360 and PS3. But they sold a grip of units where sony is still behind them. So I would like to think that, that guy was dropped on his head when he was a little kid and that his parents didn't buy him a NES when he was young and now he is taking his agner out on nintendo for his childhood mishap. I think that dude is going to get beat up by some hard core nintendo fans.:D

Read the 2nd comment about the article in the link.

That guy summed it up pretty well. he hates the wii, because its not HIS type of art, and doesn't conform to his needs.

meh, the guy's just a jack-ass thats still caught up in the whole Megahertz war.

Love how you guys can bash other consoles but someone puts down the Wii and hes a "Jack-ass". Anyway here, I don't know who has read the internet, yesterday. In a [unintelligible] panel I said a bunch of things. I was trying to be thought provoking and entertaining and fun and a lot of the stuff went too far over the top—on the entertaining and fun side, so that it was no longer thought provoking, just inflammatory. And in the process I hurt a bunch of people I care about. And so, I want to apologize now.

When I'm on stage, I'm me. I'm talking talk from me. From me. I'm not representing EA or Maxis.

I want to make two things perfectly clear.

I do not think the Wii is a piece of ****. Nintendo needs to be applauded for trying to interface on the controller front, the user interface front, on making games accessible, on making a console that you don't need to mortgage your house to afford.

Secondly, it's totally obvious—and I'm sorry that I implied otherwise—that everyone at Nintendo is passionate at making great games. Some of the games give me hope that we will be seen as an art form on par with movies and books.http://kotaku.com/gaming/wii/spore-developer-chris-hecker-apologizes-for-calling-the-wii-a-piece-of-****-242822.php

Yeah? Unfortunately that ain't gonna happen. For pretty much the same reason that gaming will never be considered a "sport"... and roughly the same reason that there aren't any awards (that I know of at least) for best DVD packages.

First of all it's because ART is already an art. Any one of a thousand video game artists can get world wide recognition for actual canvas paintings of the exact same art that appears in a video game. Also, there's nothing to be said that a video game sound engineer can't win a grammy (here's a winning tip from someone living near the NARAS: Join the Academy). But games... as an art... I don't see it.

I could argue the point... but the only thing that really matters is that the vast majority of human beings living on planet Earth (and I'm an actual GAMER who can't see it) can't see it either. So it won't happen. The Wii, Wii3, and Playstation IX won't even be able to make it happen.

And I would even go so far as to say it doesn't even NEED to happen. All video game makers need to be "recognized" for is making great video games.

Spore Developer.

Says he longs for the day when Video Games will be regarded, on a wide scale, by the general public "as an art."

Not gonna happen.

That's the gist.

I'm pretty sure his higher-ups made him apologize to save face. They don't want his comments tainting their company (They don't want everybody to think that the company's feelings mirror his).

Meh. I honestly don't care one way or another.

I can we why some people dont like the Wii, apart from the new control system and the Virtual Console some people could just see it as a revamped Gamecube.
The control system is great but the actual console isnt.
Im a ninty fan still have my SNES,N64 and Gamcube and after playing my Friends Wii with monkey balls, smooth moves, wii sports and already owning zelda TP for gamecube i have no desire to own a wii at all, hopefully the release of the new paper mario and mario galaxys will change it.

This guy is an idiot. Its fun, so it doesn't need all those fancy things like online gaming, DVD playback, HD resolutions, voice acting, non-midi music, etc...

Why do you need industry standard features when you have a new control scheme?!?!

Yeah, he is a complete fool.

AAAAAAAAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA!

Non-midi music... in 2007... Is FANCY?!? Dude... you're putting us back in the days of RF Connectors and that weird crap that you had to screw in...

And online gaming is some sort of ARISTOCRATIC tool of the bourgoisie? Jesus it's been almost TEN YEARS since people have been gaming regularly online. It goes all the way back to Phantasy Star Online... Parts one and Two... Then even released those on the gamecube. And Nintendo GAVE THE DAMNED WII a network connection... All the hardware tools necessary for online gaming. And your contention is that they did this so that their gamers would NEVER have the oporotunity to play online games?

I think you need to rethink this whole thing... Well... maybe not YOU personally. But maybe somebody who has some clout over at Nintendo needs to rethink what the hell they're doing.

Why is there still no online multi player feature yet? I kept hearing Jan 2007 don't worry, it will be soon. I know what I like and that is a major selling point to me.

The Chris guy obviously went over board with the ranting and after it spread like wild fire online, high ups busted his balls. His apology is pretty funny and shows that he did get a talking too.

Nintendo. Looks like there won't be ANY online games in 2007 at all. According to some other link I saw in the Console Gaming Systems forum. Maybe that friggin' Pokemon game will make it...

That is a shame, I was really looking forward to Wii having online multi player games. Oh well that is how it goes, I already have a 360 for exclusive games along with my PC so it balances out. I will buy a Wii if things get worked out with some must have multi games.

Pokemon game? I'm surprised that people are still even interested in that. I thought that fad had died by now but I guess not. Ironic if that is the first game with the feature haha...

Last I heard Pokemon Battle Revolution and Super Smash Bros: Brawl were still being released this year, and both are supposed to have online play.

Activision has stated that they are working on games that will feature online content (as reported by nintendowiifanboy.com (http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2007/03/07/activision-yes-were-making-online-enabled-games-for-wii/)) as well.

The unfortunate thing regarding all of this is just that people don't seem to have any patience. While I do believe that online gaming on consoles is The Next Big Thing (tm), people seem to want it yesterday. That's just not going to happen. Until it does, throw down in some Resistance and Gears of War, or hey, you could even play some games that have standard multi, like SSX Blur or Super Swing Golf. Remember having to sit in the same room with your friends to play games? It's actually better that way, 'cause if somebody calls you names you can actually hurt them, rather than just insulting them back via VoIP.

Well I'm with ya Oni... except on the point that the "yesterday" you're talking about was about 6 years ago... when the PS2 finally had THEIR first online game. Or maybe it was five years ago, when the Xbox Live! Launched. I'll even give you the argument that perhaps it was back in mid November when the Wii launched with all the hardware necessary to go online built in. But to imply that it's perfectly natural that the Wii has no online games... when EVERY SINGLE SYSTEM ON THE MARKET FROM THE DS AND PS3 to THE 360 AND PSP have online games... is misleading.

It only took a month or two before the DS had online games. There is absolutely no excuse for Nintendo. If anybody would care to come up with a reasonable argument to the contrary... I'll be right here.

They don't wanna ;).

I don't get it either. Netcode is something that's been done for years. Why is it so hard for the wii?

tenchi86
03-10-07, 12:16 PM
/\Don't think it's any harder for the Wii then the other systems, probably easier due to lower quality textures and what not. Though right now there is a huge drought in Wii games and the first ones probably were somewhat pumped out quickly to see how the system would do. I don't think Nintendo will be so dumb as to basically reject online support this time and will hopefully push developers to include it soon.

Nah... I can't see Nintendo "pushing" anybody into online support... If anything it will be the game developers who will have to DEMAND it... and the critics who'll have to get gamers angry enough about its absense.

The guy likes ragging on things, quite apparently. He didn't exactly call them POSs, but he did beat on (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6120449.html) (search for his name) the 360 (and mentioned PS3) two years ago.

Google search ftw.

Google's AWESOME. They just helped me dig up some sales figures I needed for this article I'm writing about the WRT54G.
