View Full Version : Sony to axe PS2 "Emotion" CPU in ALL PS3s

Personally I don't care, I've got a PS2 and I don't even have much interest in playing old Xbox games on my 360 (except for Forza).

If you want one that DOES play ALL PS2/PS1 games you'd better buy NOW.

All is not lost though because the PS3 will have software emulation and updates just like the 360.

Already been posted actually. Anyway this was announced months ago and for some reason everyone seemed to forget. It's really not that large of deal though because software emulation is reporting already close to 1000 titles and should increase in time. Your correct though it will not play 100% and neither will the current one, it's only rated for 99% of games. If I am thinking right even the ones with the emotion engine will be using software in a few months after a firmware update. It's rumored this will allow upscaling and region free gaming but thats only rumors for now.

I think when it was posted before, it was posted because it was just the Euro-units, now it's going to be ALL of them. Like I said, it's no big deal to me, but it'll irk some people.

I hope the upscaling part is true, because the difference in upscaled DVDs with a good player is pretty big. I can imagine Bully, GTA series and the 2 God of War games would do pretty well if the upscaler works well. I've seen some cheap DVD players where the upscaler was worthless, just a listed "feature" to sell units.

No... actually it won't be JUST like the 360 because emulation on the 360 SUCKS ASS. (As evidenced by the fact that ESPN 2K5 and about ninety percent of the rest of the Xbox games don't work. Sh** I don't think even PANZER DRAGOON works.)

Enough with your Forza talk. I'm going to get it RIGHT NOW.

Man of my word... I went straight out to Gamecrazy and bought it (along with Soul Calibur 2.) I must admit that the I'm somewhat disappointed with the rumble effect (that was a big motivating factor in Gran Turismo 3) but the rest of the game seems spot on... so I'll stick with it.

Aren't they replacing the hardware support with software?

Forza is an awesome realistic racing game, though I still haven't beaten it yet on max difficulty.

The thing I like about software emulation is that you can upgrade games, such as Halo 2 or Forza in widescreen. It's an advantage to buying said console.

not that its really 100% fact, I was reading some articles about a german website that was testing out the backwards compatability of the PS3 using software and out of a handfule of his games, only 1 worked. Here is the copy and paste:

"God Of war
MGS 2: Sons OF Liberty

They were running Firmware 1.52, the emulation does not even come until 1.60 so the fact that any ran is pretty weird. (Though it was a European model the 1.60 firmware is not preinstalled on the units as it will not be completely done till March 23.)

True, I read that the firmware will fix the issue for the most part. People just got all bent out of shape when they got the "Emotionless PS3" and it didn't play a ton of the games right off the bat. I forget how long it was before MS released their first compat update for the 360, but I'm fairly sure it wasn't right away.
