View Full Version : justify expensive gaming peripheral...?

building a really expensive computer for gaming is reasonable because you can also use the rig for things other than gaming... but how would you justify spending a lot of money on something that can only be used for gaming...? it just so happens that i fell inlove with a certain expensive gaming peripheral  ... but i just can't get myself to get it especially since to a non gamer, videogames rot your brain... but then, when i think about it, television (for the most part), iPods, etc. serve little purpose other than entertainment... but why do i feel so guilty about getting something for a game...?

Well what is it? Guess it would be a joystick. THeres few things that I'd say is worthy of a thought before buying and that would be a steering wheel and a joystick again. Steering wheel has very little purpose besides driving games, and joystick while it can be used for a lot of them its not practical unless its for flight or mech simulators IMO.

G25 :bday:
i was perfectly happy with using my Playstation controller on racing games but that previous thread about the G25 introduced me to it... i opened that thread with the "Logitech G25" in the title thinking that it was a mouse or something :bang head ...

Yikes... Now I know what you are talking about :)
I've always liked a Steering wheel for certain games on the console. So I know where your coming from. The quesiton you have to ask, is do you play alot of racing games to justiy it? I mean if its a few here and there, then eeh probably not a smart idea, if its nearly all that you play on the PC, then its worth it.

i was a big gamer back in the NES, Super NES and Playstation 1 days... after the Playstation, i have stopped gaming... i didn't even have a Playstation 2... i started gaming again a few months ago, when i bought Toca3... i'm now playing GTR2... i'm also looking for rFactor and Richard Burns Rally... all i really play on the computer are car games, since i can not play the more popular genre of FPS because i get motion sickness from them... i also used to play flightsim, but haven't played them since my controller broke about 5 years ago... i wouldn't mind a $50-$100 joystick for flightsims, but i've had a bad experience with a $75 videogame steering wheel in the past for the PS1... that's why when i read all the reviews and saw all the videos of the G25 on youtube, i knew i had to have it... but i just feel so guilty spending that much money on something with no apparent purpose other than pure entertainment... and in the view of some people as a "complete waste of time"...

if you think of it this way...
that $300 steering wheel is the only wheel you would ever need. you tried a $75 dollar wheel (i had a crap one for the ps1 as well, used it once) and you KNOW this is the real deal. if you think you will have fun with it, and you can afford it, buy it ;)
if i had the money, i would have one in a heartbeat. TestDriveUnlimited is about to be shipped...i would kill for one for that game.
and i usually only play fps. :) i've always loved GranTurismo however..

Depending on the peripheral, depends on the justification. I have a Nostromo n52 that I bought a good while ago(when they first released it) and I love it. I have used it in multiple MMO's with no issue.
I also have a g15, I havent used it in a good 6 months probably. Then again I also have a saitek 1 and 2 that are used daily on different rigs.

guess what...! :bday: i walked in to Fry's but i wasn't gonna buy the G25... on the joystick aisle, there were 3 beautiful boxes...! my friend, who is another car guy, who works there told me "let's check AP on the computer (associate purchase discount)" lo and behold...! the thing was only $227 including tax with his employee discount... needless to say, reason, purchase justification, and all that stuff went out the window... :bday:
Justification:
Everyone has free time. Everyone fills that free time in different ways, with things that entertain them. One thing is pretty much constant though - people spend money on their passtimes.
Some people spend £3000 on a single TV because they like watching movies - the TV will improve this experience for them. You like playing games - buying this expensive peripheral will improve the experience for you.
Buying an expensive gaming accessory is no different to buying things to enhance any other passtime - if it is what you enjoy passing your time with then it is an important part of your life.
Some people said to me "omgwtf, y did u spend £400 on a single graphics card??" to which I replied "why did you spend £400 on DVDs?"

Using the x-plane simulator for the pc, I was able to hone my skills for instrument landing in an airplane. The training and practice alone that I received from the process was much more than any instructional video I have watched on a TV in the past.

i played GTR2 last night with the G25... didn't go to bed till 6am... i didn't even noticed the time changed an hour ahead... it took some time to get all the settings dialed in just right... i've never owned a gaming steering wheel before (that steering wheel i bought for the Playstation that i mentioned above, went back to the store after 20 minutes of GT) so i had to use my driving experience in a real car to set the steering wheel parameters to make it feel as close to a real car as possible... i'm still working on the settings but for what it is, it's pretty good...
one thing i found out was that i suck at heel toe shifting... i can do it in a real car going 55mph braking for a turn, but approaching that chicane at Monza going 170mph and having to downshift from 6th to 1st is a whole new different thing... i still think that downshifting under heavy braking is still a lot easier on a sportbike...
starting the car from a stop, the clutch feels almost like the real thing... although you have to think about it in terms of a car having a very shallow clutch... cause obviously, a real car's clutch pedal goes to the floor much more so than the G25's pedals... on thing about the pedals... all the three pedals are on the same level... because of this and because the pedals are so close to each other, it is sometimes hard to tell apart the throttle and brakes... if Logitech is going to make the pedals this close to each other, they need to set the gas pedal a little farther back...
in the end, it's like playing a whole different game... that 5 hours or so that i spent last night playing the game was just getting to know the wheel... i wasn't setting new lap time records, i wasn't even racing the AI opponents... i was barely keeping the car on the track...!
EDIT: i just realized why downshifting under heavy braking in a car is so much harder than on a bike... it's because i learned double declutch downshift in the car... i'm just way too slow at it... in a bike, there's no such thing as a "double" declutch downshifting... just blip the throttle as you disengage the clutch...

Azn, about the pedals being too close together, i saw somewhere on the interwebs that you can crack the assembly open, and all of the pedals are adjustable...so you can have them wherever you want.
the post i saw, the guy had taken the thing totally apart, and mounted them in a cockpit he made, but upside down, so they feel even more like real pedals.

it's gonna be cool to do that so that the pedals are spaced and position just like in a real car... i might try that if i really get into this thing... but motorcycle season is starting already :bday: ...

Mods should close this thread if someone mentions a muffler they can fit they're head into :P

Might need some type of muffler on the exhaust fan for the case with all that toxic nuclear waste sitting in there from the nuclear reactor making the power to run the system thats running a 4320P Resolution with 8 GPU's.

i managed to stop playing GTR2 for a while and played Toca 3 for the first time with the wheel today... i don't know what it is, but Toca 3 seems more fun than GTR2... i think it's because Toca 3 does not support the H shifter so i have the G25's paddles set for changing gears... with all that heel toe braking stuff on GTR2, it seems like it's more work than play... i know i can set GTR2 to use the paddle shifters too, but what's the fun in that... :bday:

ROFL... I used to work with a guy who actually thought he had a neuspeed setup in his Mitsubishi Eclipse... and the he could "feel" how faster the car was... i didn't have the guts to tell him. He had the sticker and everything.
-> on topic now, What is there for great racing games now? i've been a little out of the loop.... if i'm gonna buy this thing, i kinda want a game to use it on :P

as i mentioned above, GTR2 is great with the wheel, although all that shifter and clutch work makes it seem like it's more work than play sometimes... Toca 3 is fun especially now that i found out about Starforce and downloaded a crack to bypass Starforce... it still asks me to insert the Toca 3 dvd to play the game though... another game i tried was Richard Burns Rally... i didn't get too much into it yet, but for some reason, i can not get the force feedback to work with that game...
other games that i've heard was good but i don't have yet are GT Legends, rFactor, and Live for Speed...

i found out just now that i have been playing GTR2 with the wheel with the wrong settings... i'm supposed to have "reverse effects" checked... that's probably why the steering in GTR2 feels like there's a "lump" at the center of the steering and the steering just goes limp outside that "lump"... it should make the wheel feel much better... i can't wait to try it later...

Wait... no I don't... cuz I'd be out of $300!
I do have a HOTAS setup for my flight/space sims though...

that's the next thing i want...! hehe... so i can play my all time favorite flight sim, Microsoft Combat Flight Sim 2...! i used to play that on a regular basis until my joystick broke 5 years ago... :D
One of these would be awesome. My keyboard doesn't make turns so well in Need For Speed. lol

A very valid point.
I think the main stigma is that it's called video ''gaming'' which to a lot of people emphasises that it is a childs pastime and therefore should not be deemed worthy of such expensive outlays. My goirlfriend is one of these people.
I say if you enjoy it, do it, i know i am going to be buying a dx10 card at some point this year and a new psu to boot at a cost of about £400 purely for games and inevitably my m8's and gf will scoff and in return i will say how much did your alloy wheels, ipod, mobile phone, designer clothes cost and why did you pay that much.....Because you like them and they make you happy.

i think it was that stigma that i had trouble with... i do play computer games from time to time, but i don't really consider myself as a gamer... just to pass time when nothing else to do... but with this wheel, i think that's gonna change a little bit... :bday: since i got it, i've already played on average 3 hours per day... usually, no matter what game i'm playing, after about an hour of gaming session, i start to get bored... but with the G25, i've never been so engrossed with a computer game before that 3 hours went just like that...

I am getting bored really easily with games lately.
I have tried almost every new release lately and nothing does it for me i play football manager 07 a lot which is really engrossing but i long for a really gripping game like jade empire which was the last 1 i loved but that was on Xbox. I was really looking forward to test drive unlimited but im not all that impressed with it and cant be bothered getting in to it.
Bring back games that can be completed in 8hours or so mgs2 and the ilk what i say i mean whos got time to finish an oblivion or neverwinter nights 2 in adult life?
