I am building a new rig for my general use. It is going to run RAID level 5. I already bought my controller (Mylex Acceleraid 150), and HDD's (IBM 18XP 18 GB Ultra2 LVD SCSIs). I bought 4 drives. On them, I plan to install Win2k Pro and Linux. That is what I have on my old rig (the one I am using now). I have them on seperate HDD's. Win2k Pro is on a 40 gig IDE drive. Right now, of that 40 gigs I am using 12-14. I have Linux on a 9.1 gig SCSI drive. I use up all the space it has. My question is, should I split my OS's over 3 drives and use the 4th for the spare, or use all 4 and buy a new one when one of them fails?
Although I am concerned about keeping my data, I am mostly using RAID for the higher performance. On the other hand, the drives are expensive (I think $300+). Is the extra drive going to add noticeably to the performance of the system (with 18.2 gigs per OS, I am not really to concerned about space)?
Also, does anyone know where I can order the SIMMs for my RAID controller? It came without any. I tried Crucial (http://www.crucial.com) but I can't tell if they are 40 bits or not. Thanks in advance.
