my GF just brought a brand new SONY FXA Athlon 1.0G laptop. and she agree to let me run SETI on it 24/7. :D

however, my concern is is it ok to run SETI 24/7 on a laptop?? u know, it pretty much 100% load on the system, at least CPU and memory! overheating and lifespan is the most i'm concering!! u know, i really don't wanna kill her brand new laptop even tho it's under warranty. and i'm sure she WILL kill my for revenge too!!!

has anyone running SETI on a laptop?? how long had it run?? or has anyone letting their laptop on pretty much 24/7??

i've tried to let it runs for a little over a day. the bottom of the laptop sure feels hot. however, it feels hot just for 'bout 1/2 - 1 hr of surfing the net anyway.

any comment??

I've had a Dell insprion 7000 running Seti 24/7 for nearly a year and it's fine. I've also had an inspiron 8100 running for about 4 months with no problems.

should have no problems running a laptop 24/7
all laptops produce heat when they are running
its inevitable while power is on
so crunch on!

tks TC and Lonewolf1983! :)

now, i feel more comfort to run SETI 24/7 on her laptop. u know, 'bout 4 extra WUs / day is very tempting!! ;)

Landshark - I just thought of one issue you might want to think about. Very minor, but just thought I'd throw it out. I noticed your girlfriend got an Athlon cpu. Those produce more heat than Pentums. My laptops run pretty cool relatively speaking, but still they can get hot. My old 7000 got hot enough to crack our wood coffee table. I would suggest if you want to leave it on 24/7 you place it on a non-heat sensitive surface. I clean our coffee table with murphys oil soap, and thus it stays fairly moist. The heat from the laptop dried out one spot and made it split. Don't leave the laptop on any antique/wooden furniture that you care about.

tks for ur tips, TC! it's most likely put on some sort of clothe table, or......in her bed while she's surfing... ;)

Tell her to turn it off where she is in hot places..

Just make sure the Seti isn't interfering with her other uses for the labtop ie: she wants to run some heavy duty programming database when SEti is eating up CPU usage makking it feel like some 300mhz!

usually, she's just using it to surf the net or listen mp3. however, i've told her to turn it off if she gonna play some games (no FPS game, for sure on the laptop ;) ), or play around w/ AutoCAD2000. also, i've set the priority "low" in SETIDriver, to try to minimize her everyday usage.

tks for all the great tips. and i'm sure other member could get this useful too. 'cos i'm sure there's others member might wanna use their laptop to crunch SETI too.
