Looks like Gamespy will be providing Wii developers with the technology to provide online content in their upcoming Wii games.

"This partnership will expand our wireless community of players on Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection," said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "Millions of Nintendo DS users have already logged on using GameSpy's technology, and now Wii owners will be able to do the same in a fun and easy-to-use environment."

Nintendo, do us all a favour and do away with the damned friend code system! Give us gamertags or something, but not friend codes!

Well, the problem with using tags is that they disappear so quickly. I went to sign up for the Xbox Live for Windows beta, and my handle had already been stolen by someone else! At least with the Wii I can have my alias separate from my console number.

Good to see that Nintendo is coming around to the online gaming community.

does this mean that nintendo is pawning off the multiplayer organizing to a 3rd party developer instead of doing it themselves?

No. The way I understand it, is that Gamespy is offering it's matching services to 2nd and 3rd parties with Nintendo's blessing. It doesn't seem like a bad thing to me. Gamespy used to be awesome back in the day, and I haven't heard any problems with it regarding it's use in DS games.

Well it's good they are trying to get online, but personally I really dislike Gamespy. Last time I used it (Few months ago) it seemed way to bloated and filled with junk I did not care about, however the servers themselves were pretty lag free.
