I want a Xeon 3060 and 2 gig of D9GKX ddr2. I can get both now, but have to pick one or the other. My sig has my current hardware in it. I was going to put a 8800gts 640mb in there too, but with the new cards coming out, that would be dumb. Also, with the price drop next quarter, I'm doubting whether or not now is a good time to get a new cpu with new models coming out and the possibility that the same 3060 could be $100 less in three weeks.

What I want to know is, which would benefit me the most now. The memory or the cpu ( even the 8800gts). I play games, but have been waiting to buy a video card I could keep for a few years, and with the driver issues with the g80 series, I'm skeptical. I think the new gpu would make me happy the longest, but I don't want to miss out on this memory deal, but ddr3 is coming, so who knows how long it will be the "best" memory. If you were me with my current hardware, what purchase would you make to increase overall performance. Such as, pi times, everest, highest core clock. Those make me happy, so does tweaking memory and playing games. I think the video card will be the most noticeable, but again my issues about drivers, new cards that are better price/performance.

Basically there are too many factors to consider and I need help making the wisest decision from people who have owned or own the hardware I want.

Thanks for listening to me rant.

i'd probably go GPU 1st, then RAM, and probably forego the chip upgrade. The xeon 3060 is basically the same as a e6600, so you won't see drastic improvements, if any, over the e6300 OCed to 3530mhz that you have right now.

The only thing stopping me from doing this is I am going to buy a new cpu anyway for my htpc, and I'd like to get one that will get me to 4ghz, and this e6300 won't go higher than 3700mhz. Then, I want 2gb or more of memory, but don't want to buy the same memory I have and use four dimms to get 2gb. I'd rather have the option of getting 2gb and having 2 dimms open. Plus, I don't want to get a 8800gts 640mb and then they go down in price $100. I think that would get me the best benefit, but don't want to regret it.

I now have the choice to get a new mach II GT unit for $300 so I have to add that to my choices. I know nothing of phase and don't know if this would be good or not. I think I will get a custom unit built, but that price is so tempting.

I would wait for a chip upgrade. With the price drops coming up in April it doesn't seem like a good choice to buy now, unless you really need it. Phase would be fun to play with but I suggest knowing what you're doing before you hop into it.

I'm going with the memory. It is the only item of the ones I had to pick from that will be a good deal. With new gpu's and cpu's coming out it is dumb to buy one right now. And with D9GKX being rare, I'd be dumb to pass it up. Thanks for the replies.
