View Full Version : Max HDD size on old pavilion

I know that some old motherboards had maximum HDD sizes (something to do with LBA)

Now I have had 120GB hdds attached to this system with no problem before, if that helps. I have searched www.hp.com for specifications and it gives tips on how to change HDD but not maximum size (that I saw).

So I am asking if anyone here knows how to tell what the largest HDD size a PC can recognize is.

Reason being.. I just got in the mail some Home Server Beta CDs, and decided that, rather than get a 500GB drive for my HTPC.. I could get a PATA and run it (and the home server software) on the pavilion. I havent measured the GB/$$ ration yet, so 320 perp pata might be better per buck then 500s.. but I digress. I intend to keep most files on my HTPC for speed, but will setup periodic updates to sync certain folders (if I can) so that everything gets sent to the pavilion so its secure incase of array failure.

Now I have 280GB of SATA drives at my disposal right now (not enough that only covers my video files), but the pavilion (6353 for those wondering) only takes PATA.

PC specs (not sure it can run home server, but since it can run server 2k3 I assume it can run home version headless :) ) Celeron 466MHz 256MB of PC1XX ram, up to 4 IDE devices. Onboard video (says 11MB but BIOS offers up to 1MB so I dont know.. it can run 1280x1024 at 32 million colors so I assume it is NOT only 1MB, moot... its going to be run headless...and a 27GB hdd)

I figure install server on the 27GB HDD and run 2 HDDS on second IDE channel. I have a seasonic built, antec 430W PSU so that aint an issue...It does not have onboard LAN so PCI bus may become saturated with a ethernet card.. so I think addon cards are out of the question...

So... Can I get a 500GB PATA hdd for it (adding a second one later) or should I just get a cheap socket A system with onboard SATA and get a GLan card for it?

(PS More People should use the spell checker and the learn function.. I made one spelling error in here (after 6  and the other 10 were common geek terms I had to hit "learn" for!!! )
