Im trying to set up a direct connection between two PC's to share an internet connection, one PC connects to the net Via a USB DSL modem and the PC's are connected to each other using a crossover cable, Ive selected ICS for the connection I want to share. Ive tried using the network setup wizard but the second PC has windows 2k installed so there is no support for that, how do I go about sharing the connection manualy? Do I just set the default gateways the same and use static IP's or what?

thnx in advance

If ICS is setup on the main PC, it should automatically setup a DHCP server for PCs connected to the network card. Check to see if your windows 2000 machine is getting an IP. If not, renew it and see if it gets a DHCP address. If all of that fails, set static IPs.

Ok I tried setting the TCP/IP properties to optain IP and DNS servers automaticaly on both PC's the LAN then successfuly connected on both PC's but internet access was not available on the secondary PC.

I tried repairing/disabling+enabling connections on both PC's but it still didnt work.

I then tried setting IP's/DNS servers manualy I set them to :

PC1 (pc with net connection)
IP - 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway - 192.168.0.10

DNS1 - 192.168.100.1
DNS2 - 192.168.100.2

PC2
IP-192.168.0.2

All the rest of the settings were set as above.

the secondary PC still cannot connect to the internet.

Whe you were setting up ICS, did you enable it on the NIC or the connection created from the USB modem?

try to ping a public IP from the 2nd PC. if that works then it's the DNS, yes

I would also try pinging the main pc just to make sure your getting a connection to that box as well.

On the PC that has the modem connected, go into the connection properties of the modem connection, and go to the advanced tab. Check the box for share this connection. Then select your onboard LAN for the home networking connection. Click ok and wait a second. When the window goes away, check the IP address of your onboard network connection. It should be something like:

IP: 192.168.0.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS: Any Public DNS Server, check with your ISP.

If those are correct, go to the second PC, and set the IP info as below:

IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS: ISP's DNS

That should get you connected.

After enabling ICS on the connection made by my DSL modem should the network adapter's IP automaticaly be set to the following

IP: 192.168.0.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS: Any Public DNS Server, check with your ISP.

or do I need to manualy set them, because when I enable ICS and set the network adapter on both PC's to Obtain DNS/IP automaticaly the connection has limited or no connectivity.

I was able to access the net on the secondary pc for a while but it suddenly stopped connecting to websites, I went to the main pc and it had gone back to the welcome screen as it does when you leave it idle for a while, I thought mayb this causes the connection to deactivate, I loged back on but the internet still does not function on the second PC, ive tried enabling and disabling connections and checking cables.

what could be causing this?

When you enable ICS it will automatically configure that PC's (the one sharing the connection) network adapter, I think to 192.168.0.1.

Please go to both PCs, open a command prompt, do an ipconfig and hit enter. Post here the results. Thanks.

As you can clearly see, the client has different DNS set than the DSL-gateway. Why?

One problem I see from those, you dont have a network card in the first SS, only the USB connected modem.

Oops the Lan connection on the pc that the first SS was taken on was disabled, so it did not show up on IPconfig ill retake the SS tommorow, and repost it.

And this is the host machine. Did you manually set the parameters for that LAN connection or did ICS set that up? AFAIK when you enable ICS on the DSL modem, it should set your NIC to 192.168.0.1 when it sets up ICS. I DO know that ICS is not friendly with setting your own IPs...usually best to stay out of the way.

And ICS should only be turned on on the DSL modem.

RIPSTER

Well when I do turn on ICS on the DSL Modem it does not automaticaly assign an IP, the settings in the pic were manualy assigned.

I'll try again then post back

Ok when I enable ICS on the DSL modem connection it sets the ethernet connection's IP to 192.168.0.1 and the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0

the rest of the settings it leaves blank.

If I try connecting to the net on the secondary PC it still does not work, Ive tried connecting with the TCP/IP settings on automatic and with them set identicaly to the main PC.

am I missing something here?

03-31-07, 06:39 AM
On the second computer, try setting up an IP 192.168.0.2 submask 255.255.255.0 and gateway 192.168.0.1 <--this tells the second computer that it's going to get it's connection from the first computer.

Yes, it means you have 100Mbps Ethernet, like the rest of us.

Please post all of your network settings, without speculations or any further changes, so that we might decipher what's going on.

The secondary PC has changed, it is now running windows XP, I ran the network setup wizard and it detected the shared connection on the main PC, it then created an internet gateway, but I still cannot connect to the net Via IE, both the gateway and LAN connection are active.

heres a SS of the gateway -

You didn't include the /all switch. You need to include that so I can see DNS information.

The second PC doesn't have a DNS server, so he should be able to ping the primary PC but internet would not work for that reason, I would assume.

Jon

Where did you see that? It's what I'm assuming too, but considering how long this problem has gone on, I'm not willing to assume anything else. I just wanted to see it so I can be without a doubt.

Any PC you want to be able to go on the Internet must have a DNS server defined.

Any PC you want to be able to go on the Internet must have a DNS server defined.

The first one should get it via DHCP. I assume using ICS you would point the second PC's DNS server to the IP address of the primary PC

Try the host's IP first. I don't understand why it wasn't populated to begin with, but whatever. If it still doesn't work, change to your ISP's live DNS.
