Well, just bought a couple of sony DVDRWs so i can burn a fedora dvd iso, and the first two failed with nero. I tried cleaning the drive (The dvds themselves were still in the plastic wrapping, so they are clean) and tried one again. no luck. It wasnt until I opened a third dvd that it worked. It worled fine when burning an ubuntu iso a few weeks ago, but that was with just a normal cdrw. It was a cheap drive (External 16x, litlle over $100 at compusa a few years ago. Its an I/O magic. never heard of them before picking this up.) So, failing drive or was I just unlucky enough to get two duds in a 5 pack of DVDRWs?

I had about 30 duds(didn't work with two other computers as well) out of a 100 pack of Imation I finally got through.

They are DVDRW, so if only 2 in the pack are working Im not gonna panic. I might be annoyed since I did pay 20 francs for them (works out to be slightly over $16) and that means so far, wasted about $6. Im just surprised. Had a pack of philips CDRWs, been using them for o, about 4 1/2 years now. No problems. But hey, I guess losing $6 is better then having to buy a new drive and dishing out another $100-$120.

I've learned cheap CDRW/DVDRW media = bad (v.bad) probs when reading, down the line. I second the philips brand, been using then for a year and a half with no probs, both cdrw and dvdr.

a cheap burner can also be the cause as well as how fast you burn

Yes, I had a DVD burner for 2 years, after 6 months it stopped burning and just recently it stopped reading, im having to play my DVDs over my network from my laptop to my main rig.

well, the DVDRWs are only compatible up to 2x, and the version of nero Im using wont let be burn at 1x, so no choice there. If it does die, well, I have a cd burner from an old emachines that I could put in the enclosure (I would try it in a drive bay, see if it is the electronics in the enclosure, but no free drive bays)
