For the new rig I'm picking up, I'm thinking about running Ubuntu and virtualizing Vista 24/7 for stuff that Linux can't pick up (i.e. DX10 gaming.. please don't suggest WINE :p). Kinda getting fed up with a lot of MS stuff so I'd like to run Linux as the main OS.

To the point: I'm wondering how good Intel's VT (Vanderpool instructions) technology is. Two, I'm wondering about the effect of cache. So either I pick up a 6320 (4 megs cache), 6300 (2 megs) or 4300 (no VT).

Anybody with knowledge out there?

If those are your plans I would definitely go with a processor that has VT. I'm not sure on the effects it will have on cache since I'm not very familiar with what you want to do. However, with the price drops coming up I'm sure it wouldn't be very much more expensive to pick up a chip with 4mb.

uh good luck with DX10 gaming in virtualization...

you can't even do basic 3d yet. DX10 is YEARS away

VT is nice, but i would not want to run vista in it, Runs XP noticably faster than qemu + kqemu, but still not realtime

Ok thanks for the clarification.. i thought you could virtualize without a hitch as the virtualized OS is unable to detect that it is being virtualized no? So I cannot run a DX10 game on a virtualized OS without getting smoked?

Virtualization = OhMyGodSlower. Not only you have to run Linux, AND Windows Vista (we all know how much it likes RAM), but also the actuall game, and all the software needed to translate that game.

My suggestion would be to dual boot Ubuntu/Vista.
