View Full Version : Stacking Heater Cores?

Last night I made an interesting find, one of our duties as mechs is to keep the shop clean, so that means taking out the trash. On the very top of one trash can was a copper heater core, made by Harrison. I fiddled with it for a second, it still had some brownish liquid in it, so it wasn't leaking. So I set it beside the dumpster to pick it up later that night.
I've pumped water through it, no leaking and looks as if there is no corrosion either, just another good heater core thrown away by Pep Boys, oh well, it's mine now :D
It's a bit smaller than my GoDan Industries 6"x11" copper heater core, 6"x8". I can fit two 120mms on the 6"x11" and one 120mm and maybe a 90mm on the other one. I was wondering how one would go about stacking these two for maximum cooling potential:
res/pump -> 6"x11" -> 6"x8" -> Waterblock
or
res/pump -> 6"x11" -> Waterblock -> 6"x8"
or any other number of combinations?

Hook them up in parallel.

you have two heater cores and i cant even get my grubby little mits on one? if you put them in series then there is a good chance of reaching room temp if you have them in differnt places so heat cant be passed between them, stacking them however they would be better in parallel
parallel is the way to go
but you want to equalize the flow somewhat (in relation to the rad's cooling area)
to find which has the lower flow resistance, feed your pump from a bucket and run the discharge through the wb and then to a T (a Y would be better) and through the parallel rads; observe the discharge rates
put your longer runs of tubing going to the one that flows the most, particularly if it is the smaller of the two
be cool

you could go dumpster diving in a Autozone dumpster looking for heater cores.:D just be careful because of all the crap there.

Is a HEATER CORE A rADIATOR???? Sorry but i'm a bit:beer:
Yeah Nick, a heater core is a small radiator that puts some of the engine's heat into the passenger compartment. So when you use the warm air against the windscreen, the warm air is coming through the heater core.
You can also find similar ones in liquid cooled scooters and motorcycles used as the main radiator.
If you have a copper waterblock, look for a copper heater core.

i'm gonna be running two of them soon, should i do 2 in series stacked or in parrallel stacked ?

Pfft hit up Pep Boys' dumpster. We throw away nearly every damn thing that can fit in that dumpster, and then some. Various items we throw out or have thrown out into the dumpster:
A front axle off of an F-250
Heater cores
Radiators
Brake pads
Brake drums
Rack and pinion
50gal. drums
hubcaps
Name it, it's been in there. The funny thing is nearly everything that is thrown away, works perfectly. Scored another heater core tonight, aluminum though, no leaks, nothing wrong with it. So that makes 3 heater cores in the proposed system :D

ok heres some proposed setups, the goal is ambient cpu temps. Stack 2 cores and run them in parelell at the back of the case at the top, or same as before but at the front at the bottom. or 1 at the top and one at the bottom. ? At the front they will be getting clean air. At the back, it will be air that is in the case.

for ambient cpu temps you'll need a TEC. with dual rads you'll probably be able tog et ambient water temps but the cpu will still be a few degrees up. That said I'd say a side by side arrangement for the rads if at all possible, otherwise you're pumping warmer air through one.

you mean stacked, or at different parts of the case ?

oh, i see what your saying, side by side, i dont have room for that. I could put one in the back and one in the front and i could duct air to the one in the back so they both would be getting cool air.

back & front with ducting for the rear one would be at least as good as side by side :)
