OK I just gave this guide a try.

http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthread.php?p=1334769383#post1334769383

cd /tmp
tar zxpf /media/cdrom/VMwareTools-1.0.2-39867.tar.gz
cd vmware-tools-distrib
sudo ./vmware-install.pl

I couldn't get past the no such file found error in Gentoo.

I did a search and nothing turned up.

Also the file name referenced is for the ESX server 3.0.1 and not the free VMW server 1.0.1 build 29996.

Anyone else get VMtools installed successfully?

I'd like to be able to safely shut down the SMP client when Windows shuts down and automatically restart it when Windows starts up.

Audio,,,, I looked into this and saw something shine and forgot about it. I just don't have the attention span to endlessly mess with nix.

Will be reading when you figure it out.

I initiated the VMtools installation from VMWare Server and then went into the guest OS but there was no /media/CD mount point or any tarball from VMWare that I could access.

When I tried this in Ubuntu a while back, there was a folder with that tarball in it afterwards.

I think that guide I linked only applies to Ubuntu and ESX Server.

Gentoo is Linux but it's still quite a bit different than Ubuntoo/Debian in a lot of ways.

I'll see if I can find Jivetrky's post on it.
