View Full Version : DigitalDoc 5 Automatic fan speed mod... NO NEED TO MANUALLY ADJUST THE FAN SPEED!!!
Automatic DigitalDoc 5 mod
I read this one over @ commongrounds-pc.com http://www.commongrounds-pc.com/Art...tobaybus-4.html
By adding a simple relay switch, DigiDoc has now the ability to control the RPM of the fan.
I want to make this mod for the Delta 12cm x 12cm x 38mm 130CFM fan(s). I got two of them screamin' on my BlackIce 2. Thanks to Chip @overclockwatercool, he threw two of these fans as a complimentary gift with my order, but they're really noisy as you know.
Anyways what you guys think about this mod?
If it's a good one, what type of relay switch should I use and where can I get one online? What's the difference betw. Single Throw Relay and Double Throw relay for example? I'm going to connect 130CFM Delta 12cm fan to it? Its ratings are: 12VDC (Operating Voltage range 4.0 - 13.2), 0.60 Amp, 7.20W...
any ideas????
Thanks in advance,

I think the mod is a great idea, dunno why I didn't think of it. ;) Man, you think those fans are loud? They make a 150cfm model too. hehe.. Anyways, the difference between single throw and double throw relays is that one just switches something on and off, the other switches between two sources. You need the double throw relay, so that you can switch the fan's ground wire between 5v and 0v, which will switch the fan from 12v to 7v. Pretty simple, and if you get it wrong, it should be easy to figure out what happend and fix that. You don't need terribly strong relays. So don't worry about getting the super heavy duty 25amp automotive ones. 5amp ones would be more than enough, I'd guess 1.5amp would be the desired size, tho getting one that's too big won't hurt anything. Too small and the power draw could overheat it. :)

Link doesn't work. :(
great thx alot Una;)
You're using the 152CFM 53dba Deltas, wow... crazy ;)
The next step is automatic shutdown mod for the DigiDoc5, then it'll be a complete device. Any ideas?
Crazy Jayhawk if the link doesn't work, go to www.commongrounds-pc.com you'll easily find the mod there...
BTW Una it's good to see you here.
Also thx for all your help with my RAIP idea over @ HardOCP forums aswell. Unfortunately I couldn't finish it yet due to lack of space in the Enermax 989AL-00 case (Eheim 1048 didn't fit;). But I'm waiting for the Dual MPX motherboards that will be released soon, then I'm going to do the RAIP setup in my Addtronics7896A.
I also loved your idea of using lower rated secondary pump for the radiator.
Wellcome bro ;)

For anyone else having trouble with the link. :p
Una can you take a look at this link... I found these relays @ radioshack (http://www.radioshack.com/category.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=CTLG%5F010%5F008%5F003%5F000&Page=1&MSCSProfile=745D84CBF04D14A48AA6FF9C89D722C036698F 129F4C93D891A07105F1015CEB4C6BCD8DEC5AE5EA7D4B5B52 C206DE0252D40EE138DC7ADEBA9825156639A336445A36ECC7 EE549809D97E519522AA5AA9C61D0B769C1D9573B591410AC7 F8C33E1C153F13AF03ECC9C435E11317603F0B28EB883C62DC 43B912F60FAB1AEA3C3C09D26EBBBB7FD6)
I guess the first one Mini 5A DPDT (double pass, double throw I assume) CAT.#: 275-249 12VDC coil is the one that I need???
Also there're these socketed ones that look like the one was used for the mod @commongrounds-pc.com ....

If you're going to use RadioShack model# 275-218 relay (like me),
things are a little bit different. It doesn't work as described in the Commongrounds-PC's article. I contacted BeoR and he told me that he's going to update the article soon.
RadioShack model# 275-218 relay, I connected the DigiDoc5 header [red] to 7 and ran a wire from 7 to 3, [black] to 8 and ran a wire from 8 to 4 and the switch worked.
i thought someone might be interested...

Sorry about the delay, haven't been able to get online much lately. Anyways, that relay looks like it should do the trick. And no, I'm not using the 152cfm delta's. I'd like to give 'em a try, but right now I'm using a 150cfm Papst fan.. ;) It sounds alot like a Microwave oven fan.. ;)
No Problem;)
I'm really happy with this mod and it's working perfectly fine... I connected both Deltas to the same switch but don't recommend it to anyone to do the same tough ;)...
who wants to manually adjust freakin' knobs after spending all those hard-earned cash on a aquacooled rig... primitive, no? ;)

I finally got around to get the relay. 275-249 12VDC coil. It's a little different then the one describe here:
http://www.commongrounds-pc.com/Articles/autobaybus-2.html
Does anyone know how to hook this up??? Thanks
does anyone have a schematic of this mod? can't seem to access site.
Sweet link, thanks!
BTW: Who here has cut themselves with a Delta Fan?
