Looks like the same phone as this one, for half the up front cost. I love geeks but it seems a bit odd for them to use MIR. http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=CNSZAU-21006902477&cat=VOP
Skype is the best app for free PC to PC overseas calls now, and I'd say probably the cheapest PC to phone (for overseas calls, the US pc to phone is free too). also, i don't have a home phone for over 3 years now - who needs this crap anymore?

A land-line is actually VERY important for when you're in the state of emergency... if there is a blackout, the landlines USUALLY still work.
Your only other option is to get a battery backup for your modem and computer, which in the state of emergency will not last that long.
Cell phones may not work either during a blackout...
Though, I do agree... my brother got rid of his land-line, and so did my gf. If you have a family, it's good to have a land-line... I just wish there was a SUPER BASIC plan for it... like $5/month and u only use it in case of emergency... but no... everyone wants your $$, so there is no more cheap plans... the telephone companies are losing business on land-lines so they don't even offer that.
I remember when I was in college... about 5 yrs ago I canceled roadrunner (major spikes, had them check it 6 diff times and they kept BSing me, so I terminiated)... ended up going with Verizon slow DSL and had to pick up a phone to do so... I got the cheapest phone plan which only ended up being like $14!! Why can't they do that nowadays?!? :(
With this phone hooked up through PC, can you call another regular land-line or cell phone, or does it have to be through a PC application?

You can call a regular land line or cell phone with skype. Skype Out (outgoing calls) is $30 per year and covers domestic numbers. International calls have a per-minute rate. If you want to receive calls on skype from cell phones / land lines then you need Skype In (which is I think around $40 a year)
Of course, using skype to call someone else on skype is free, worldwide.
When the power went out a few years ago in that major power failure (affected MI, OH, PA, NY and parts of Ontario) my land line was dead for days. Shortly after that I canceled it. To me there's no point to having one. If there is an emergency situation my cell phone will work, and with a car charger it will never be dead as long as I have some gasoline (or my car battery has a charge). If there's a major emergency that knocks out cell towers, odds are landlines will be dead too.
And besides, from the blackout I learned that if there is a major widespread emergency a phone isn't gonna do you much good anyway :) You can't get anywhere fast without street lights, most emergency personnel are tied up with other things, etc. You really just gotta sit tight and wait it out.

Yup I know
I ditched my landline phone months ago and use yahoo phone now. But.. I havent seen a "Usb telephone" for Yahoo yet so I am still using a headset. So something like this would be great... if it worked with my application, so far I have only seen "Skype" compatible phones...( not that I have looked hard or anything).
Ordered one of these for my Skype use. $6.99 after MIR, which is the cost of ground shipping. Thanks for the cyberdeal.

Last I used you could still dial on Skype to any land line in the US for free. Pretty slick.

All one has to do in a power blackout is connect a phone to any phone outlet in the house, even if the person is using VOIP and the traditional phone is disconnected it should be able to reach Emergency services aka 911. I believe by law the phone companies must allow the phone plug to be live to reach 911 in every State, irregardless if the person has phone services from whoever controls the phone outlet, as in Verizon or whatever Bell service is in the area.
How do you think these work, even when a person does not use their phone plugs in the house if they are using VOIP instead, it's because the outlets are still live to be used for emergency purposes...
