Hey all, i thought it would be interesting in knowing how much storage space you got in your primary rig, or system with most HDD space.
thanks David for making this poll.
Done :)

2x 250gb in raid, + a 200GB in this comp.
500 + 150 here.
I'll be getting atleast one more 500 sometime soon.

heh heh Nice!
I only have 600 in my HTPC (2x320GBs) But those are going to be installed in my file server in two weeks with a 120GB and at least another 320 if not a 500GB hdd.
then my HTPC will have only 80 or 160GB of space.. (not sure if I am going to stripe or not)

I have a lot and if that's too vague then I have 200GB + 80GB= 16.75²

Sam
what do u need that much for?
I do lots of video editing and each 1 hour of regular VHS video in AVI uncompressed format uses on average 45 gig of space. High Definition uses much more and I need some drives set up in Raid 10 or 0 to eliminate dropping frames in HD.
Much of it is used for storage of video footage that I haven't had time to edit yet.:)
2 X 320GB Seagate Barracuda... in a RAID 1 though... so I guess it only counts for 320.

1+ Tb I've got 4x 250gb western digital drives, almost completely full, had to start backing up to dvd.
and everyone thinks it's funny, i have 2 keyboard boxes full of hard drives ranging from about 680mb to 160gb (mostly 6.8Gb and 40Gb) all IDE, and in my new rig i'm making the jump to sata, and going either 10k or 15k speeds, undecided about raid.
My friend came upon about 40 500 GB SATA hard drives that he salvaged from an office fire. Suffice it to say I obtained a number of them for my new rig for 20 a piece.

I have to laugh, (at myself) one lonely 36gig Raptor, I keep at about 35% free space. It's all I seem to need, although my next build will doubtlessly have much more. Not necessarily because I need it, more likely because that will be all that's available. Then of course there is Vista to consider.
Anyone with less than that? Please chime in I hate to be at the bottom of the heap, unless there is a prize.

Down to 1050gb atm due to lending out a drive to a friend who lost his C: and one of my own drives that is out for RMA.
If I had all drives running, I would have 1290gb of useable space. On 7 physical drives, and I guess about 6 logical drives for now... but thats subject to change as my partition needs change.
Thats my main rig in a rather crouded mid tower... Backup rig, semi caseless has 2x 80gb sata drives in Raid 0 for a rather small 160ish GB.

2x 320Gig Perps Raid 0
1x 320Gig Perp (Hot Swap Backup)
1x 160Gig External Storage
Spares of 160Gig and 80Gig drive laying around if not mistaken as well.
This is not including the 12Gig I have in another computer thats been dormant for a few years and 20Gig in the wifes laptop.
I have an overkill amount and when SSD's come down in price i'll surely be getting some of those.

I no longer back up most of my data to DVD's. Only the really important stuff. Otherwise it takes WAY too long for me and my 12 hour work days. I backup my primary Hardware RAID-5 array to a seperate Hardware RAID-6 NAS :p Now that's fast and convenient (but not cheap). I also have my music library and all of my applications mirrored to 3 networked PC's. Of my 6.5TB, I'd say almost 1/2 of it is redundant...

When you archive your old and massive audio CD collection to FLAC.. It gets gone fast. Then have tracks for the players. Even more is used. Saving DVD's/TV shows also rakes up a quit a bit of space.

anything above 100 - 200 is a little ridiculous just because it is hard to truly
use that space, unless if you have a lot of porn or something. idk...
LOL's. Maybe some pron, but most of my space is used for my band's recordings. Anywhere from 16-20 Tracks @ 44.1K/24Bit uncompressed for roughly 2 hours per practice (only once a week lately) is approx 10 GB's a week (2x that if we practice twice a week). That adds up pretty quick over the course of 10 years ;) . I think I'm currently at like 800GB just for my band's projects, and then another 200GB in Audio sample files  . Then there is the 200GB MP3 collection, and my Programs Backups that is almost 75GB! It adds up QUICK! Almost time for me to consider swapping to the 8-port version of my card or swapping to 4x 1TB HD's...

There is plenty out of the box options. A nice server rack would work.
My pick would be go FreeNaS and use a case that has features that suite you. Or build a custom enclosure.
Overall the price would be lower than going to a prebuilt NaS solution. Plus you will have more control.

DIY a regular ATX case. I modded my Antec SOLO to hold 10 HD's. 6 Down low by way of custom brackets, and a "4-in-3" 5.25" bay with its own 120mm fan. All 10 HD's have cool air blowing directly on them, too. I tossed in a good Areca RAID card (ARC-1220), and a cheap P5B-E and an extra e6320 I had laying around. It is one FAST NAS!!! :D

This is a good question, and fun reading what others say. I tried something I haven't done before a RAID 0. I have two HDD that i RAID'ed together and now have a max space of 2tb (i use about 10% of it, but darn if I am not cool hahaha)

Hey all,
I currently have 2*250 Gb Seagate 7200.10 single platter in RAID0 and a 640 Gb Seagate 7200.11 for backup.
My main rig reports 75gig but I also have a 250gig portable I use sometimes. I have never tried to do raid, dont know much about it.

I'm up to 5.7Tb in my fileserver.
My current machine, I have a 160gb drive, a 240gb drive, and a 500gb external drive (WD myBook).
Contemplating storage for my new machine, I'm thinking I will go 2 x74 gb raptors in raid 0 for OS and apps, 2 x 1TB drives (or where ever the best price point is) in a matrix raid of raid 1 for hundred or two gigs for important personal docs/files, and the rest in raid 0 for file storage that is replaceable.

I see in your sig it says 10,000 RPM drives. Well what 1TB drive has that spec? If so where are you hiding them :santa:
Update to my previous one.
Lets see I can upgrade my total now.
2x320Gig Internal
1x320Gig External (eSATA) (Almost all exclusively 3D Animation files)
1x640Gig External (eSATA) (Full System Backup Drive)
1x160Gig External (USB 2.0) (Loose ended files from old systems)
1x250Gig Portable (USB 2.0) (Anything big I move)
I only have 1 PC but all my externals are sitting within arm's reach of the PC ready to be powered on anytime. So just over 2TB of space.
Soon I'll be replacing my internal 320's probably for some 640-750's, and see if I can retire my old 160 probably at the same time.

According to the poll, when I selected it I had between 400GB and 600GB of space.
Time to update:
Main PC: 2.5TB
3x500GB 32mb-cache 7200.11's
3x250GB 410AS 7200.10 single-platter drives
1x250GB ES drive (Ubuntu and storage)
I probably use like 500GB max of this.
Fileserver: 1.5TB
1x750GB 7200.10
1x500GB 32mb-cache 7200.11
1x250GB WD IDE (OS)
HTPC:
1x500GB Hitachi (I don't actually use any of this space as everything's on the fileserver and connected by gigabit, but it was the same price as a 250GB Seagate at the time)
IPCop:
20GB Barracuda IV (quiet drive, used only for logging)
Other desktops:
2x250GB (Seagate and WD)
So just over 5TB before formatting

I closed this... A poll thats been running for 2 years isn't real meaningful anymore.
If you have objections or want a new poll, PM me with the details.
