I recently purchased an AMD 1900XP chip and it seems that my temps hang around 52 ish (and this is with the cover off and a desk flan blowing on it!) What is best effictive/quiet heatsink and fan combo out there that would help me out? I think my heatsink is a Cooler Master DP5-GI31C. It doesn't seem to be doing the trick. From what I've read, some of you guys have had much better luck. I would prefer one that doesn't make too much noise because I can't stand that noise, however I would be willing to put up with some if the fan was really good.

So, what has worked for you...or what have you heard works the best? Do I need thermal paste also?

Thanks for your help. It's much appreciated!!! : )

Glaciator II.
Comes with a fan and arctic 2 thermal compound.

Keeps my 1800+ at 1705mhz cooler than my sk-6 did.

Are you sure your heatsink is on like it should be? I mean even with the side panel off and a desk fan blowing air on it, it should run a bit cooler than it does now. I know that heatsink wont do miracles for you but it should at least cool it better than that. Make sure you have thermal paste on there not some pad. And if after trying this you dont see any difference then try a better cooler like the Glaciator or an SK6 or the new Volcano 7.

I take it you have NOT read the beginners guide.

I'm not sure if I've read the beginners guide or not. This is the first time I've dealt with AMD, but I've built a ton of PC's and never had heat problems like this.

I know that the heatsink I have on there now does have a thermal pad...I take it they suck, right? I'll try some thermal paste and see what that does for me. If that's a no go, I guess I'll have to buy another heatsink/fan.

Thanks.
