Hello People,

Ok - so I just got my bonus for completing my last contract on time and set aside some £s for my new rig.

I plan to buy everything after the April price cut as I can wait for a little while:rolleyes:

In my 'PC bank' I have set an intial £3000 line and came up with the following:

Mobo
Asus Striker Extreme NF680i SLI (good?) £213.84

Case
SilverStone TJ 07 (love this casse) £223

Power Supply
Enermaz Galaxy 1Kw £223

CPU
Intel Quad - QX9700 £650

CPU Cooling
Swift CPU kit (only cpu needs k'ing) £180

RAM1
4Gb G.Skill DDR2 PC2-6400 PQ CL5 Series £327.4

RAM2
4Gb G.Skill DDR2 PC2-6400 PQ CL5 Series £327.4

Primary HDD
2x Rap150 Got - YAY!!!

2nd HDDs
Hitachi 1Tb x4 Not Part on budget

GPU1
8800gtx £387.74

GPU2
8800gtx £387.74

Can people please tell me what they would change? Budget is £3k - I think my Dell 3007s 30" is enough for me and my keyboard and mouse a totally fine.

Plan to buy 1Tb HDDs but that is later on and not part of my budget at the moment.

I am settling for 8GB of RAM as I will running alot of VMware instances. The PC will be 24/7.

Case and cpu...dont see this changing unless intel release a better version of the quad.

PSU. Read good reviews on it - seems it not noisy and has more than enough power.

Mobo. Prefer SLI mobos even with nvidia's suspect raid handling. If there is a better option I might hold onto my curren 7800 a little while longer.
The thing is that I really want a intel based chipset but also want sli. I would go for the R600 but those cards are really HUGE and in my eyes not worth it until they can effectively make them better. Actually...hesitant about the 8800 as well...maybe the 8800 or 8900 range will be single slot cards, which I prefer. Worst case scanrio...buy the 8800 WCing versions and stick another WCing loop inside just for them. Dont fancy cooling everything with one loop.

I been reading tons of threads on mobos and still feel undecided. Its like with the AMD64 u knew the SLI-DR was tricky to get setup up initially but once done was totally awesome at OCing and had all the features I wanted. Looking for something for the intel side of things. My last intel mobo was the Abit MAX3 which was another totally awesome board. Also...really want a mobo that can give me 2 or more pci slots...finding this is proving difficult.

I treated myself to 2x 150Gb Raptors yesterday so got those.

Its like I know roughly what I want - just need to hammer it all out.

Ah - one thing to bear in mind...trying to build a reasonably silent pc that is more reliable than how much it OCs. Also...will be running vista64 ulti.

Feel free to PM me if u want.

Thank u very much for all ur help in advance.

screw the striker extreme and get a evga 680i.. they are shipping the A1 revision boards with most of the problems sorted out (i have the A1 board)

um how much ram are u getting? 8gb or 4?

hi 07...8Gb of RAM. I am becoming more dependent on vmware.

EVGA....hmmmm...kool...only has 2 fan connectors on the mobo...one chipset and the other cpu...was hoping for at least 3/4. Also...07...are u running vista? How does it run? Any minor things? Oh...and it does look pretty kool with the first 2 sata ports side facing. Will check a few reviews out on the a1 revision.

Tks!
