View Full Version : My old Tyan is possessed.

I bought this old Tyan Tsunami ATX over a year ago used for $60...at the time it was going to be a secondary system and well, I haven't had the heart to get rid of it yet.

I did some reconfiguring between a couple of systems (the Tyan was one of them) so I could squeeze out some better times and actually did gain an extra WU or two a day out of it. The Tyan had a Celly 600 on it that I couldn't hit 900 with and my GF's PC had a PIII 700 that wasn't overclocked. Stuck the Celly in the Soyo board with a wire wrap at 1.98V and boom...900MHz. Shaved about 3 hours off of the 12hr times I was getting with it at default.

So now I'm stuck with the PIII and the old Tyan. Was running fine the past few days but noticed the times weren't dropping any on that client according to SETIQueue. Went in and checked and it was only running on a 66MHz bus...ack! Now this board has always given me fits at running any processor at 100MHz, default or not. Anyway, I just spent 3 hours trying to get it to run that PIII 700 at its default speed....no go. Would lock at the black Win2k startup bar screen. Tried reinstalling NT 4.0 WS on it and it would give me a hardware failure...sigh.

Basically, I got sick of it. Went into the BIOS and was going to try running it at 83MHz at least...would be better than 66MHz anyway. This board has crap for overclocking options...66, 68.5 (weird eh?), 75, 83, 100, 112, 124, 133...that's it. No voltage adjustments at all. So I got a wild hair and decided to throw it in at 112 because I was just mad at it.

It boots. It loaded Win2K. It loaded SETI. It has been running SETI fine for quite a while now.

This thing is possessed. Won't run at default and being the horrible overclocker it is, will only run overclocked (or underclocked).

It's given me a headache but at least I did get a little more than I was shooting for in the beginning. Looks like it's going to be giving me about 8hr times... :burn:

It can only be ET trying to tell you something. Someone obviously wants you to crunch those WU's faster. Nice result, but very strange. You are now entering the Twighlight Zone:confused:

One of those weird problems for sure. Sounds like it might be a periperhal acting up at a certain speed despite everything supposedly being in spec at default. Maybe that board has some multiplier issues. That's my best guess. I had a box that gave trouble with the nic at certains speeds. Turned out the more the pci bus was overclocked the better it ran - to a point of course. When I slowed it down closer to default it got worse - but at default it was okay. The point where it crossed over from okay to bad was not at a multiplier step though. Never figured that one out.

Pretty sure it's the board on this one. It's had more parts through it than a pornstar to be any specific device.

Ah well, seems to be doing fine as is so I'm not going to jynx it.

Tyan's are a bit freaky..........

Very stable, but freaky........(Me being an ex-Trinity 400 owner)

What I actually meant was divider issues - just noticed I said multiplier. I was pretty tired last night.
